The match between Floyd Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez was one of the biggest what-ifs in boxing. Although Mayweather managed to give Alvarez the first loss of his career, many felt that the Mexican boxer needed more time to face the likes of ‘TBE’.

Alvarez was 23 years old at the time and after this loss, he would turn into boxing’s biggest superstar. This was the last time he would be defeated in 9 years. He went on a 7-fight winning streak, followed by an 8-fight steak after his draw against Gennady Golovkin and becoming a champion in 3 divisions.

Many fans wanted to see Alvarez and Mayweather fight once again to decide who was the better boxer. This would not be the case, as Money retired from professional boxing in 2017. To this day, many have called him out for ducking Alvarez during his prime as Mayweather was notorious for cherry-picking the time he faced strong opponents.

Canelo Alvarez exposes Floyd Mayweather

This became more clear after Alvarez revealed that Mayweather wanted to fight him when he was just 18 years old. In his latest documentary, ‘The Making of Canelo,’ the Mexican star reflected on his bout against Mayweather. He claimed that Money wanted to offer him $1 million to fight him while he was just earning around $5000 per fight. At the time, Alvarez was so desperate that he consulted his promoter, Eddie Hearn.

They offered me the fight when I was 18. They offered me a million dollars to fight against him. At that time, I was earning 100,000 pesos. That’s $5000. I was still getting the bus, I had three jobs. I told Eddy, ‘It’s a million dollars,‘ said Alvarez.

However, Hearn was able to talk him out of it and told him that he would face Mayweather in a few years for a much larger paycheck. “Eddy said: ‘You’re not going to fight.’ He said, ‘In a few years, you will receive ten times that amount. Remember This,” he added.

These kinds of tactics are the reason some might feel resulted in Money’s perfect record. Although Alvarez might certainly want a rematch with his rival, he has a long career ahead of him.

The Mexican superstar is to face Gennady Golovkin for the third time to close out their trilogy. The fight will take place on September 17th in the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Alvarez will look to get back to winning ways after his devastating loss to Dmitry Bivol.
