Is Mayweather turning boxing into a circus with these WWE-style exhibition matches?

Boos rang out in Arena CDMX in Mexico City as Floyd Mayweather fought John Gotti III in a rematch exhibition fight on August 24. It was an underwhelming experience for the fans who bought tickets to the event expecting an action-packed matchup. There was quite a good backstory leading up to the event — a feud between the Gotti and Mayweather clans that arose following the former’s disqualification during their first meeting. After all, members of both camps engaged in full-scale brawl in the ring after the first fight concluded. However, the bitter feud lacked a befitting ending!

In the rematch, Mayweather dominated since the first bell rang, peppering Gotti with shots, round after round. It was a technical masterclass from Floyd, but he shied away from engaging in any close-quarter trading of devastating punches. Meanwhile, Gotti, too, delivered nothing in return, becoming a punching bag for the majority of the fight. The fight registered no knockdowns, leaving a lot of Mexican fans very angry.

The only moment that had the potential of making the highlight reel came in the second round. After the referee, Hector Afu, warned Mayweather for a debatable behind-the-head blow on Gotti, a lengthy time-out ensued, where Mayweather expressed his frustration with the referee’s decision. Then, he asked him to move out of the way and start the fight. To make matters worse, Gotti was also being stopped from engaging with Mayweather, and ultimately, the referee was replaced by another man who officiated the rest of the match. On that note, DAZN Boxing had a question for the fans on X: Would you watch another @FloydMayweather exhibition bout?

Safe to say that the fans in the comment section reflected the same disapproval and disinterest, as many of them gathered at the Arena CDMX in Mexico City.

An overwhelming “f*ck no” to upcoming Floyd Mayweather bout!

One fan wanted Floyd Mayweather to stop putting up any more exhibition fights, claiming that his last bout was similar to WWE moves. They commented, “Hell the F no! That was was WWE type shit! Switching refs in the middle of the fight. He had Mexico straight booing bro. And you know Mexico was drinking that night. Never had and never will. No. They need to stop.” The switching of referees, and a round going over the two-minute time limit might lead people to question the seriousness of exhibition bouts.

Another user claimed that Mayweather put up boring fights, even when he was in his prime. Therefore, nothing better could be expected from an older Mayweather who fights in exhibitions. Furthermore, they remarked that he only thrived in the boxing business due to his “mouth”, saying, “Of what value is it? Seriously. He’s old and even when he was younger, he wasn’t exciting to watch and was only successful due to his mouth. Also, there are no judges scoring his exhibitions.” With no official scores being given for exhibition bouts, is it really a surprise that some people think that some Mayweather fights might be staged?

One fan stated that they haven’t watched a Mayweather fight since their encounter with Andre Berto in 2015, and dodged paying a fortune in PPV as they watched it at a bar. They stated, “I haven’t watched a mayweather fight since the berto fight and I watched that one at a bar so I only had to pay a cover charge.” Was Mayweather really a boring fighter, or was it a gross overreaction?

Another commenter claimed that Floyd’s exhibition fights were staged, remarking, “I dont watch him anymore rigged fights.” Well, the way Mayweather’s last two exhibition fights have gone, there was more drama than action inside the ring.

On the contrary, one fan was still interested in watching Floyd fight as long as they didn’t have to pay for them. They wrote, “I’ll watch as many Floyd exhibitions as he wants to do… why not? Not paying for it but I’ll watch sure.” It must be noted that Mayweather holds the record for most PPV buys for a fight dubbed as the “Fight of the Century” on May 2, 2015, against Manny Pacquiao. Now, it is a bit sad that people aren’t willing to pay money to see Mayweather put up exhibition fights.

Notably, Mayweather has fought in seven exhibition fights, and dominated in all of them with ease. Nevertheless, are you excited to watch ‘TBE’ fight another exhibition match? Let us know in the comment section below.
