At the recent press conference with Showtime, Errol Spence Jr. answered if he liked coming in as an underdog. Although interviewer Brian Custer branded Spence Jr. vs. Crawford as “a 50/50 fight“, he declared that Vegas currently held ‘Bud’ Crawford “as a slight favourite“. According to his statement, a number of people already considered Terence Crawford the “no. 1 pound-for-pound“.  In light of the given statements, Custer asked the unbeaten champion for his thoughts regarding the “underdog” label.

In his reply to Custer, Spence Jr. referred to Floyd Mayweather‘s career in the sport. Additionally, he spoke about potentially beating Crawford and yet facing criticism. Here is what the Southpaw fighter said.

Errol Spence Jr., who is thinking about moving up his current weight category after the Crawford fight, does not consider himself an “underdog” against ‘Bud’. According to the current unified Welterweight champion, he does “not even think about” the term “underdog“. As per his statements, only the media constantly reminds him that he should probably think of himself as an underdog against the WBO Welterweight title holder.

I don’t even think about it. You guys remind me more than myself. I don’t think about it at all. That’s not, you know, what I’m focused on. It really doesn’t matter,” told Spence Jr. In his opinion, there is a parallel between Floyd Mayweather and his career. “When you watch even Floyd’s career, you know, every time he accomplished something they moved the goalposts.”

In this connection, ‘The Truth’ is of the view that even if he beat Crawford, he would inevitably face negative comments from the fans. “I feel once I beat Terence Crawford it’s gonna be something. They’re gonna move the goalpost again and say [that] I’ve been away from this way too long. But, I’ve never missed weight,” he added. Contrary to those underestimating or criticizing Spence Jr, ‘The Truth’ is confident. In his opinion, this fight would ultimately boil down to “grit, patience, and focus“.
