I shop just like Santa Clause, by myself,” said Floyd Mayweather as he continued to drop $15 million on his recent shopping spree. In a recent viral video, the former welterweight champion claimed to have shut down an entire shopping mall to get his early Christmas shopping done in privacy. However, UFC-fame Chael Sonnen has raised doubts about these claims.

American UFC headliner Sonnen retired in 2019 after amassing a successful career of 31-17-1. In the wake of his retirement, he established his own promotions company, ‘Caged’. Furthermore, he went on to start his own YouTube Channel, which discusses the happenings of the combat realm. In one such video, the former fighter disputed the claims made by Mayweather of spending $15 million on shopping.

Is Floyd Mayweather lying?

In a recent episode of his YouTube videos, Sonnen detailed the video that shows Mayweather dropping insane money on shutting down a mall in the middle of the night to get his Christmas shopping done. While the video might be impressive in all its claims, Sonnen pointed out some logical issues with the story. For instance, while it was claimed that the boxer spent $15 million on shopping that night, in the video he can be seen pulling out wands of cash from his bag. How does one carry $15 million in hard cash?

Sonnen noted, “How does having a bag that has roughly hundred thousand dollars in it represent making a purchase at a mall of $15 million? Do you see the problem there? If I went to the mall I would have no bag. I would have no bag of cash. I would either have the 15 million I’m going to spend, I would have no bag at all, I would use my card.”

But Mayweather could’ve paid the bills partially in cash, and the rest put on his card. Possible right? Sonnen asks why he would do so. He says, “You’ve never combined the two, you’ve never brought anything with cash and put the rest of it on the card. You’ve never done that. But we’re led to believe that in the story that Floyd spent $15 million on shopping. Cause we have proof that he has a bag of $100,000 in cash. I mean the whole things silly right?”

So is Floyd lying? What about the video then? Sonnen points out that throughout the video, ‘Money’ was seen whispering. He suggests that the fighter did so because he did not want to disturb other shoppers present in the mall. So maybe Floyd was not all alone in the mall. Sonnen’s accusations remain accusation, without any clarifications it from Mayweather’s side.

Not the only Floyd Mayweather lie

It is not the first time that Sonnen has come out debunking ‘lies’ that involve ‘Pretty Boy.’ Earlier, the fighter-turned-analyst also claimed that reports of Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor fight being sold out were the “biggest lie” he’s lived through. He noted, “The biggest lie that I lived through. I hear the term fake news in 2016, I didn’t believe that that was true. I thought that was just something you say.”

He further added, “ I lived through Mayweather [vs.] McGregor, where I stood on the floor of the arena and was instructed to tell the world it was sold out and I could look and there was thousands of empty seats.”

The iconic 2017 between the two headliners was touted as one of the biggest events in contemporary boxing history. It was reported that the iconic T-Mobile Arena was jam-packed to witness the clash go down, furthering the claims of massive earnings. According to the Nevada State Athletic Commission, the live gate for the event was $55 million.

However, with the doubts raised by Sonnen, there is a concern that emerges. How true are the numbers that get reported for fights? While there has been a call for a neutral body to stage these numbers, today private entities do the job.
