She was two months short of her twenty-second birthday when Laila Ali made her debut on October 8, 1999. While most boxers start much younger, welterweight title holder Christy Martin’s bout inspired an eighteen-year-old Ali to take up gloves. Never a person to rest on her laurels, Ali took the road to entertainment and entrepreneurship post-retirement. But, as with her boxing career, she succeeded in her new ventures.
She is immensely popular on social media. For example, Laila Ali’s Instagram handle is followed by over a million! The former world champion from her end makes it a point to bring up intriguing stories and clips. She even joins during moments of sorrow and happiness. Like the clip she shared yesterday.

Why didn’t he raise his hands??
The short video clip, lasting barely ten seconds, was initially posted by former Heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis. It shows two boys squaring off, gloves on, amidst a party! Though faintly, someone urging the one with a cap to raise his hands is audible. However, he responds, “No, I’am good.”
His opponent, one without the cap and a southpaw, moves circularly. First, he lands three back-to-back left-handed jabs on the former’s face. And then the latter finally closes the argument for good by delivering a right-left-right combination.
@mrlennoxlewis mentioned, “Don’t let your ego get you hurt.”

Laila Ali and the art of boxing
Laila Ali couldn’t stop laughing and mentioned, “The Three Piece Got Him!” What the former champion mentioned, and the youngster did allude to is the “3 Piece and a Biscuit”.
It involves three steps:
- A right-handed punch to the face, especially the jaw.
- A short jab to the nose.
- And finally, close it with an uppercut.

Some may even add a strike before landing the uppercut.
Three years after her debut, a knockout victory over Suzette Taylor fetched her the inaugural IBA Super Middleweight title. Two months later, Laila Ali defeated Valerie Mahfood to grab the WIBA and WIBF Super Middleweight titles.
As much as “Madame Butterfly” retained her titles, she never hesitated, stretching herself out of her comfort zone. She knocked out Gwendolyn O’Neill in the third round to win the vacant WIBA Light Heavyweight title. Muhammad Ali‘s daughter retired after a rematch win over O’Neill on February 3, 2007. She was undefeated and retained all her titles.
