Canelo Alvarez is back, but maybe not with a bang. Instead, the undisputed Super Middleweight champion would defend his titles from the London-born southpaw John Ryder. The duo would be slugging it out in front of a Mexican home crowd in Guadalajara’s Estadio Akron on May 6. Thirty-two-year-old Alvarez, who remains one of the sports’ biggest crowd pullers, has faced criticism over the upcoming contest.
Though his second foray into the light heavyweight division proved calamitous, Alvarez immediately recovered and won the trilogy match against arch-rival Gennady Golovkin on September 17, last year. But unfortunately, the champion had to undergo surgery on the left wrist to fix a torn cartilage.
Though he wasn’t expected to be around till September, the success of the surgery sparked an early return. However, since its announcement, the match has attracted a fair share of criticism. Many fans believe Canelo, the undisputed champion, could have picked a more ‘worthy’ opponent to beef up his legacy. Even when he shared the news through his Instagram handle, one of the first reactions to appear stated, “Thanks. A fight no one asked for.”

Thus, when DAZN Boxing, where the bout would be live-streamed on May 6, shared his picture, an assortment of reactions followed. While a few fans went with the pic and shared their views, a few detractors also chimed in.
Fans react to Canelo Alvarez being called ‘King’
The image of Canelo with a crown and the caption probably irked user @nicolas_x16. They couldn’t help but comment that Floyd Mayweather Jr. is the King. “King? Mayweather is the King.” Canelo immediately found some support from user @awesomeamigo1, who asserted that Alvarez is the pound-for-pound King of the ring! Though he posted in Spanish, his message roughly translates to, “P4P King of the Box! Undisputed Super Middleweight World Champion.”

user @saad.m_3k toed a similar line. They believe that after finishing off John Ryder, Canelo would wind up David Benavidez for good. “Knocking out Ryder, then Benavidez,” they said. But user @ratherbchillin disagreed and immediately responded to @saad.m_3k that Dmitry Bivol would hand over another defeat to Canelo. He said, “Outboxed by Bivol again after Ryder***.”
User @patrick_zollo seems to share a matching belief. He cautioned Alvarez against taking John Ryder lightly. As far as Bivol is concerned, he is already waiting for the Mexican. “@bivol_d is waiting for you. Ryder ain’t no joke,” they commented.

user @hotboysnypa probably came up with the most caustic comment when he remarked that the fight against John Ryder is something that no fan, in a good sense, desired. They said, “The fight no one wanted.”

David Benavidez gave an open shout-out to Canelo Alvarez after defeating Caleb Plant on March 25. However, seemingly the champion doesn’t seem inclined to fight the WBC (Interim) Super Middleweight champion. In an interview given to Fight Hub TV‘s Marcos Viegas, he clarified settling the issues with Bivol first after the May fight against Ryder.
