Boxing is a sport of fine margins. But not always. That’s not the principle Dave Allen lives by, and he showed the boxing world, too. The British fighter had the whole arena on its feet, as he almost pulled off a win from the jaws of the loss. However, it seems the fans didn’t like how the fight ended, and it’s a recurring theme for them: judges making a blunder.

Allen, 32, exchanged blows with Johnny Fisher on December 21 on the Usyk vs. Fury 2 undercard. While Fisher was the favorite to bag the win, few backed Allen because of his experience. But the fight ended in heartbreak for the latter, as the judges scored the fight 95×94 (x2) and 93-96 in Fisher’s favor. It’s a result that many didn’t agree with, as the whole arena erupted in boos as soon as the announcer read the result.

Fisher started the fight strongly, as he impressed the crowd with his brute power. After strongly making his presence felt in the initial three rounds, Fisher soon witnessed a downturn as Allen found him out. Allen banked on his opponent’s lack of experience and not-so-great boxing IQ as the fight turned into a bar fight. However, in an exchange of clashes of punches, Allen’s experience edged Fisher’s power, as he even dropped him to the canvas in the fifth round.

There were several moments in the second half of the fight where Allen threatened to finish Fisher, but the latter’s solid chin and durability allowed him to hang on. The fans and the viewers could witness Fisher’s wobbly legs, which somehow managed to carry his weight throughout the fight, and the fight went the distance. But the moment Fisher got his hand raised, the internet became a hotbed for heated discussion, as the fans took to their respective handles to vent out their anger.

Boxing fans are up in arms against the call

Chisanga Malata believed Allen was on the receiving end of a bad call. He wrote, “Dave Allen has been ROBBED there. We’ll and truly. F**k me. 🤦🏾‍♂️” The boxing journalist didn’t shy away from his anger, as Allen had been dominant in his display and had connected 50% of his power shots in the fight.

A fan also shared similar sentiments. They declared, “They just f-ckin ROBBED David Allen. I hope that’s the only robbery of the evening…” Bad judging has plagued boxing for a while, and fights such as Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol have divided the fans this year.

Dan Rafael also expressed his frustration with the decision. He penned, “We go to the cards in Fisher-Allen: 95-94 Fisher, 96-94 Allen and 95-94 for the winner by split decision Fisher. I dont agree at all. House fighter gets the nod. #boxing #UsykFury2.” Fisher, promoted by Matchroom Boxing, could only be seen to be playing catch up in the fight, as Allen’s jabs and power shots had controlled the fight and visibly won every round from round 5 to 10.

Interestingly, Ohara Davis took a dig at HE Turki Alalshikh, who had organized the event. He commented, “His Excellency made an entrance into Boxing and has done great things so far, but there are some things which he can’t change, and that is the corruptness that still lies within this sport #Boxing.” The Saudi adviser had made several changes to make boxing great again. But he has failed to eliminate the judges’ error, as Beterbiev vs. Bivol and Usyk vs. Fury I controversial decisions came under his watch.

Lastly, a user asked Alalshikh to get competent judges. They demanded, “@Turki_alalshikh please get competent judges who are not corrupt. Dave Allen won that fight! This decision was so bad I don’t even wanna watch the rest of the card. Terrible judges. My friends are all upset because Dave Allen got ROBBED! He won that fight. #DAZN #MATCHROOM.” To curb the menace of arbitrary scoring, the 43-year-old even introduced the concept of an AI judge for Usyk vs. Fury II, but it also spared an intense debate.
