Come September 17, it will be the twelfth anniversary of one of the most contentious conclusions a boxing match has ever faced. Over a year after defeating Shane Mosley, Floyd Mayweather Jr. met Victor Ortiz at MGM Grand in September 2011. With the WBC Welterweight title on the line, the match ended in the fourth round with a knockout victory for Mayweather Jr. But, how it wound up remains a hot topic among fans. As a video of the match resurfaces, many commented on what they felt about the notorious outcome.

Whether Floyd Mayweather Jr. was right or wrong? Was it against sportsman spirit? Boxing lovers still debate these questions like they did the time when the video came up early today. At the same time, many admired him for his coolheadedness, and a few criticized Ortiz for playing the victim card despite his actions.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. shows that in the ring, always stay on guard!

Lauding Floyd Mayweather Jr. for a good job done, a user named Timz Lamentillo stated that Victor Ortiz became the b*tt of jokes as he denigrated the sport’s rules. “That’s what you get when you don’t respect the sport. Ortiz made himself a laughing stock. Nice job, Floyd,” he said. The following user also echoed similar sentiments. They contended that Ortiz craved victory so badly that he resorted to knocking out Mayweather Jr. by headbutting. “Ortiz was so [desperate] to take out Mayweather he [tries] to KO Mayweather with his head, head butt,” they wrote.

One user highlighted that Ortiz first went for a needless headbutt and then whined about getting knocked out. They wrote, “Dude was headbutting for no reason then complains after getting knocked out cold.” A user named Chris also joined, giving a big shout-out to the younger generation. He said that Mayweather Jr. schooled Ortiz big time about “Karma” and the consequences. He said, “To all younger kids of you watching… Floyd [taught] him [a] BIG lesson about KARMA 😀 and consequences ;-).”

But among a few who still disagree with Mayweather Jr.’s actions, one user said that Mayweather barely wins a bout fair and square. By no means could it be termed a knockout. It was just another “sucker punch,” he said. According to the user, Mayweather Jr. carries loads of money to hush away any wrongdoing, “Floyd [can’t] win in a fair fight. This wasn’t a knock out, just another sucker punch. Guess he has enoumoney to get away with it.

No infractions

Right from the first round, it was clear who held the reign of the match. Outclassed by Mayweather Jr., Victor Ortiz finally found some voice in the fourth round. However, cornering ‘Money’ Mayweather in what looked like a deliberate headbutt, led to Mayweather Jr. receiving a cut on the mouth. Resultingly, the referee called time out for the foul. Ortiz, however, accepted his mistake and apologized to Mayweather Jr. The referee signaled for both the fighter to resume fighting. Soon after they touched gloves, Mayweather Jr. taking advantage, lunged and, with a right cross, closed the deal for good.
