Amanda Serrano backing Edgar Berlanga—Is she right, or is Berlanga overrated?

It started as a curious question. From where did Canelo Alvarez‘s opponents come from? Mexico topped the list with 21, followed by the USA. Puerto Rico, on the other hand, only had two. But shouldn’t it be more? Especially after Edgar Berlanga endeavored for a challenge to dethrone him? That’s what Amanda Serrano thought too.

The proud Puerto Rican turned to the comment section of Boxing Habit’s post as the post provided a detailed breakdown. According to her, the count was 4, as she listed Jose Cotto, Kermit Cintron, Miguel Cotto, and Berlanga. Her comment read, “This is Incorrect! From Puerto Rico it’s 4. I can imagine from those other countries 🤔.”

However, when a fan pointed out that ‘The Chosen One’ was from Brooklyn, Serrano, 35, questioned the statement and contrasted the claim with her own life. She declared, “I was born in Puerto Rico but raised in Brooklyn. Does that make me from BK? Is that even a nationality? 🤦🏻‍♀️”. But the debate didn’t end there. Another fan explained that Berlanga, at 22-1, was not from Puerto Rico. Rather, he was of Puerto Rican descent and wasn’t born there. In addition, the comment noted that Berlanga was American. This again irked ‘The Real Deal,’ who asked the fan to get the “facts straight.”

She continued, “He’s Puerto Rican. Get your facts straight. Miguel Cotto wasn’t born in Puerto Rico either. 🤦🏻‍♀️” But when someone questioned how the super middleweight champion could be Puerto Rican when he wasn’t born there, Serrano had a scathing response. The Carolina native said, “That’s so stupid to say! A Chinese couple travels to NY & they give birth there is the kid Not Chinese? He’s American?”

Notably, Berlanga was born in Brooklyn to parents from Puerto Rico. He proudly carries his Puerto Rican heritage and descent in the boxing ring. But he is an American national and citizen. Therefore, after a while, when the debate reached a point where sense got tossed into the bin, Serrano decided to put an end to it with an amusing example.

The Southpaw boxer wrote, “I’m just saying if your parents are from an island it doesn’t matter where you were born your still your parents race. Imagine me being born in Vietnam because my parents went to visit there. I’d be Vietnamese, that’d be cool but it’s not how this works lol…”

Serrano, at 47-2-1, is the flagbearer of the Puerto Rican crop of fighters in the squared circle. While Puerto Rico has given birth to many star boxers, Berlanga wouldn’t find his name on the list because of his American nationality and citizenship. However, he considers himself to be a proud Puerto Rican because of his heritage and descent. Besides, most of his family continues to reside on the island.
