Subrial Matias either made the wisest or worst decision of his boxing career. According to Bill Haney, it’s the former. Recently, Devin Haney went toe to toe with Regis Prograis at Chase Center in San Francisco. While putting on the show of a lifetime, ‘The Dream’ absolutely decimated Prograis’ chances of ever fighting in a PPV event. It hasn’t even been a week, and Haney is back making the headlines for his next potential fight.

While appearing in a recent interview with Fight Hub TV, Bill Haney responded to Subriel Matias demanding $4 million to face Devin Haney. Matias is coming off a win against Shohjahon Ergashev, held on 25 November in the undercard of David Benavidez vs. Demetrius Andrade. However, that doesn’t justify the IBF junior welterweight titlist’s demand for an outrageously high paycheck. Here’s what Papa Bill had to say about it.

Bill Haney claims Subrial Matias doesn’t seem like a boogie man

While appearing in the interview, Bill began by suggesting he spoke to Peter Khan about arranging a fight between Matais and Haney. However, during their interaction, Bill claims Matais didn’t seem like a boogie man as people call him in the 140 pounds division. “Well, I gave Peter Khan a call about it, and then he didn’t sound too much boogie man to me at $4 million,” said Bill.

Bill went on to reveal that he called Khan because Devin Haney was thinking about a fight against Matais. However, he could not believe Matais demanded $4 million for the fight, so he waited 30 minutes and called him back again. “I said, well, the kid only made a couple hundred thousand then, so we didn’t make $4 million to go to Australia. We made 2.8. Peter Khan knows that…I just think that’s the way of not making the deal happen,” said Bill. While the Matais fight might have fallen through, here’s why a fight against a knockout artist like Gervonta Davis is failing to materialize.

Devin Haney on Gervonta Davis

After Haney’s win, the boxing world is speculating who Haney might fight next. One of the top contenders is ‘Tank’ Davis, but what Haney said about Davis during the post-fight press conference suggests against it. “Tank don’t wanna fight because if he really wanted to fight, he would be trying to build up the fight instead of trying to knock it down,” said Haney.

He went on to claim a fight against Davis would be the biggest fight in boxing, but Davis’ attitude doesn’t seem as if he wants to fight. “It’s a big fight, and it’s the best fight for boxing, but he only talks down on the fight,” said Haney. Later, during the interview, Haney stated, “Like I said many times, they say everything, but let’s fight.”

Following Haney’s win over Regis, Matais’ $4 million demand to fight Haney did not sit well with Bill. So, the father of the recently crowned champion made his thoughts known about Matais. However, the bigger question is – did you really want to see Matais against Haney? Or does Davis, Ryan Garcia, or Shakur Stevenson seem like a better match?
