Can Devin Haney ever recover from Ryan Garcia's left hook that dismantled his boxing era?

Former WBC super lightweight champion Devin Haney isn’t having the best time. ‘The Dream’ is coming off a devastating defeat at the hands of his career rival, former interim WBC lightweight champion, Ryan Garcia. Despite getting his loss turned into a no-contest, the Las Vegas resident doesn’t seem to have a solid grasp on his future in the sport.

While recent social media buzz has indicated a beef between his father Bill Haney and welterweight contender Blair Cobbs, it’s unlikely to turn into a full-blown fight. The only path ahead for ‘The Dream’ is to secure a rematch with Garcia to avenge his loss. In the meantime, recent training footage of the former undisputed lightweight champion seems to have made him the butt of all the jokes.

Earlier today, Fight Hub TV posted a clip of Devin Haney training in the gym with former IBF lightweight champion Mickey Bey, whose last defeat came at the hands of George Kambosos Jr. The video, captioned, “Devin Haney is staying active in the gym!!!!,” showed Haney sharpening his skills under Bey’s guidance.

This update follows a lawsuit Haney recently filed against Ryan Garcia, seeking damages for battery, fraud, and breach of contract. The lawsuit stems from Garcia’s doping violation after their April title fight in Brooklyn, New York. Despite dropping Haney three times with his devastating left hook and winning by a majority decision, Garcia later tested positive for ostarine.

As a result, the win was overturned to a no-contest, and Garcia was handed a one-year boxing ban along with a $1.2 million fine. Adding fuel to the ongoing rivalry, Devin’s father and trainer, recently issued an ultimatum to Garcia on X, giving him 48 hours to enroll with VADA. The Victorville native fired back, stating he had no obligation to follow the Haneys’ demands for a rematch.

Amidst the drama, reminiscent of the tense lead-up to their fight earlier this year, Haney’s new training footage has sparked criticism and mockery from fans on social media.

Fan speculates—Haney is training to defend against left hooks

Lately, whatever Devin Haney does is met with criticism online—this was no different. One user explained in detail why his training in the clip won’t help him. “That’s not [going to] work, [Devin] has to maintain distance or close the distance. Ryan can feint and punch through the guard,” the user deduced. However, the clip isn’t representative of Haney’s entire training.

Another user didn’t think Haney’s training would be enough to save him from Garcia. “He still too slow[.] Won’t see it coming 😂,” the user commented. If Haney’s game doesn’t improve, unfortunately for him, that will indeed be the case.

The next user responded to Bill Haney’s statement in the clip. “Ryan single [handedly] dismantled the Devin Haney era with one left hook,” wrote the user. Bill had said, “Welcome to boxing and the Devin Haney era.”

Someone else sarcastically speculated what is Haney’s training all about. “All his training revolves around him keeping his hands up now 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣,” the user quipped. While it might sound like a joke, considering how much trouble Haney had with Garcia’s left hook, there’s some truth to it.

Meanwhile, this user gave no hope for Haney’s potential comeback. “That’s the only place he’ll be active,” the user wrote. Notably, the WBC had ordered Haney to fight Sandor Martin some time ago, but due to a low purse bid—and with his promoter Eddie Hearn opting not to participate—Haney was ultimately forced to relinquish his title.

That being said, despite Devin Haney staying active in the gym, fans don’t seem too optimistic about his chances against Ryan Garcia. This makes a rematch against ‘King Ry’ even more crucial for Haney’s career. However, whether that ever happens is yet to be seen. What did you think about Haney’s training?
