Although Top G might be known for his kickboxing pedigree, a lesser-known fact about him was that he was also a very successful chess player in his childhood. In a podcast with Anthony Pompliano, Tate revealed the reason he couldn’t continue chess was because of his parents splitting up, which led him to pursue kick- boxing.
“I was growing up with chess, then my mother and father split up. My mom was English, wanted to go back to England, I was 11, 10, or 11 and in America chess was quite big in schools and obviously, I had my father as a coach who would take me to all these tournaments,” he said pointing out that his father’s absence cost him a coach.

Pompliano then asked Tate if he played chess a lot. So I was the youngest ever to win it. I remember I was sitting there across some 16-year-old when you’re like 5 and a half. That’s scary right? and I remember when I beat him, he cried. That made me happy I was like Ha Ha, not so big now.” He said.
