It’s a tradition as sure as Cinco de Mayo itself: Canelo Alvarez gracing the Las Vegas ring during the Cinco de Mayo weekend. In a FightHype interview, Brian McIntyre was asked about his thoughts on the fight against Canelo Alvarez vs. Jaime Munguia. Even though ‘BoMac’ believes that it’d be a “decent fight,” at the same time, he mentioned that Munguia isn’t ready for the level of the undisputed champion. He predicted that the undefeated Mexican boxer would end up getting knocked out late in the bout.
McIntyre said, “Canelo going to stop him. He going to stop him.” Then one of the reporters asked him when exactly this would happen in the fight. BoMac stated, “I say in 10.” But this means that it’d not be that bad of a fight.
The trainer agreed, but he also added, “Yeah, yeah, decent fight. It’s a decent fight. But Munguia ain’t ready for that level yet. He ain’t been on that level yet.” So, according to Crawford’s coach, Munguia is rushing in for a grand event, that he may not successfully come out of.
However, Munguia’s team would argue that this fight is indeed happening at the perfect time, given his current momentum, especially after defeating John Ryder in his previous fight. Additionally, Canelo’s team has not raised any disadvantages for Munguia, as confirmed by his own team.

While fans are thrilled, the looming presence of David Benavidez, the WBC’s mandatory challenger, casts a shadow over the excitement. Negotiations between Canelo Alvarez’s camp and Benavidez failed, raising questions about the reasons behind the breakdown. This was attributed to an allegation that Alvarez attempted to include a clause disadvantageous for his opponent. Adding to the intrigue is the absence of a rehydration clause in the contract for the Munguia fight.
This has been a point of contention in Canelo Alvarez’s past fights, with critics accusing him of seeking advantages over his opponents by way of contractual additions. Munguia’s co-promoter Fernando Beltran proudly highlighted the lack of any such clause, but there’s a twist. Talking to ProBox TV, he said, “The negotiation, once [Eddy] Reynoso entered the negotiation, was quick and easy. Yes, there is a rematch, there is a rematch, but logically the experience is on Canelo’s side.”
