Is BoMac's arrest a major setback for Terence Crawford's career?

Pound-for-pound great Terence Crawford is the first male boxer in the four-belt era to become a two-division undisputed champion. Currently, he is aiming towards a fight with Canelo Alvarez at 168 lbs to become a three-division undisputed champion before retiring from the sport. But to achieve this historic feat, he needs the support of his long-time trainer Brian ‘BoMac’ McIntyre, who has been with him since he was a young boy.

2023 had been a great year for McIntyre professionally as Crawford became the undisputed champion at welterweight by defeating Errol Spence Jr. Given his other boxers’ accomplishments, McIntyre was even rewarded the coach of the year award of 2023. However, he was detained at the Manchester airport in England that same year. Why?

British fighter Chris Eubank Jr. defeated Liam Smith in their rematch on September 2nd, at the Manchester Arena in Manchester last year. ‘BoMac’ was brought in with only five weeks to go to help Eubank Jr outclass Smith. The boxer won the fight via 10th-round knockout. Shortly after that, as the happy trainer was heading back to the US, something went wrong that prevented BoMac from getting on the plane. Apparently, he was detained at the Manchester airport for carrying a firearm.

Having a firearm in the UK has some serious repercussions. The airport authorities found a loaded gun in McIntyre’s check bag while they were scanning his luggage. Although he had clarified later that he forgot to remove the firearm from his luggage, the officers quickly arrived and detained McIntyre before he caught his flight back to Atlanta.

For how long was Brian ‘Bomac’ McIntyre in jail?

Possession of a firearm gives you a mandatory 5 years of prison in the UK. However, the 53-year-old received a 20-month suspended sentence. But there had been a real struggle to get BoMac’s sentence reduced. Terence Crawford with others flew to England to give evidence of BoMac’s innocence. Crawford entered the witness box and stated that he had known McIntyre for many years and that he was a kind, gentle, and honest man. A lot went on to prove the good character of McIntyre.

Judge Nicholas Dean KC finally reduced his sentence at the Manchester Crown Court considering ‘exceptional circumstances’. The judge said, “You were sufficiently careless to carry into this country a firearm, a prohibited weapon.” The trainer accepted his carelessness and said that it was an honest mistake and he deeply regrets it. In layman’s words, his sentence meant that he didn’t have to serve jail time and could return to his country.

Personal life, boxing record, and more about Brian McIntyre

Before becoming a trainer, BoMac was a boxer himself. He fought in the heavyweight division from 1994 to 2007 and has a modest record of 7-14. McIntyre lived on the same block as a young boxer who was just starting out, and he eventually became his sparring partner. That same small boy is now one of the biggest boxers in the sport, Terence Crawford. McIntyre got a fresh start as a trainer after deciding to shift careers. That ultimately helped him achieve greater success.

Along with Crawford and Eubank Jr., the 53-year-old coach has also trained former world champions Amir Khan, Jamel Herring and Maurice Hooker. He is now concentrating more on community service and boxer training. McIntyre and Crawford grew up in the same Omaha neighborhood. They are aware that the children living in this neighborhood require assistance in order to have a positive life trajectory.

Apparently, Bud and McIntyre pooled their own money to open a gym that the troubled children could use without paying anything. Along with molding them into skillful boxers, they aim to mold them into better people. Through their efforts, the two have helped several Omaha children.

McIntyre’s most successful fighter until now, Terence Crawford, will be seen facing Israil Madrimov at LA’s BMO Stadium on August 3rd. Meanwhile, what do you think about BoMac’s incarceration and personal life? Let us know in the comments below.
