There are not too many fights that hold more weight in the sport of boxing than the highly anticipated match between WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford and unified champion Errol Spence Jr. However, despite ongoing talks for a match for years, the fight has never materialized, leaving fans disappointed every time.

It was recently reported that talks for a bout on June 17 were underway with many sources confirming that it will happen. However, it looks like the fight might not take place anyway as ‘Bud’ recently came out with a message to his followers on Twitter.

Terence Crawford makes an unsettling announcement following Errol Spence Jr. fight rumors

The WBO champion took to Twitter and sent out a short and cryptic message to his fans. He reminded everyone that it was April Fools Day hinting that the fight might not take place. The tweet may not be directly connected to the Spence Jr. fight rumors, but it is natural to speculate since he posted it around the time talks were ongoing. Moreover, the fans also wondered if this tweet was indeed related to the bout. User @jblockheads claimed that Crawford never wanted to fight and was just messing around.

Meanwhile, one user named @MyPoetryHurts called him out on this message stating that April Fools Day had passed.

Crawford’s last fight was against David Avanesyan in December, where he emerged victorious. On the other hand, Spence Jr. fought in April and dominated Yordenis Ugas, adding the WBA title to his collection in the process. With both fighters only having one fight each in the past year, it’s not surprising that the fight between Crawford and Spence Jr. failed to materialize yet again.

This fight has been one of boxing’s biggest if not the biggest fight that the fans have been wanting to see for a while now. Both fighters are undefeated and champions, but are yet to compete against each other in the ring. There can be many reasons attributed to why this fight is not being made with a major one being the politics of boxing, as per an article published by NationalWorld.

Moreover, another problem that arises is the guarantees fighters get for the fight and purse split which also takes a lot of time to sort out. This coupled with the fear of losing an undefeated record and future lucrative deals could possibly add up to the fight not being made. Although these are valid reasons for not fighting, two champions not meeting in their prime to face each other is certainly a disappointment to boxing fans and the sport as a whole.
