Does Terence Crawford really need Canelo Alvarez's name to sell a fight? What do you think?

Terence Crawford is angry and rightly so. Isn’t he one of the biggest draws in boxing currently? Despite his reputation as a crowd-puller and numerous records and laurels to his name, Eddie Hearn threw Canelo Alvarez‘s name here and there during the buildup of his fight with Israil Madrimov. While it seemed like a topical thing, that wasn’t the case. When these comments came to light, the American fighter made things clear once and for all.

The rumors of Alvarez vs. Crawford had the boxing world buzzing for a while before that scenario turned into a fizzled daydream. It was Hearn, 45, who admitted that he banked on the brewing rivalry to promote Madrimov vs. Crawford. When these comments came to light, Crawford, 36, made his distaste known.

In a conversation on The PorterWay Podcast, the newly crowned WBA champion called out the British promoter for being “disrespectful.” He said, “I thought it was disrespectful for Eddie Hearn to lie and say, ‘We had to use your name to promote the fight.’ We didn’t use Canelo’s name to promote sh*t. He’s trying to stay friends with him, but it’s disrespectful to me.”

Crawford, at 41-0, continued and pointed out how he shut down every question relating to Alvarez. He added, “So for him to say we had to use his name to sell the fight is disrespect.” Notably, Alvarez, 34, is committed to his coming fight with Edgar Berlanga, which proved to impede their negotiations. However, the Mexican champion didn’t shy away from asking for closer to $150 million to make it happen. That’s not it. He had also labeled the fight “easy work” for him. As expected, Crawford didn’t hesitate to throw shade at him.

Canelo Alvarez’s ‘easy’ fight remark didn’t sit well with Terence Crawford

In the same podcast, the Omaha native suggested the duality of Alvarez. While the 61-2-2 record holder called it an easier task, he also wanted to bag hundreds of millions for it. Crawford declared, “I heard him say I’m easy work. If I was easy work, you’d take all that money that he [ He Turki Alalshikh] is offering you. But still he wants $200 million for Benavidez, and he wants $150 million to fight me. So that just lets me know right there I’m a threat.”

Crawford also expressed that he posed a threat to Alvarez’s legacy, jumping divisions, reaching 168, and putting on a show and defeating him. But with that hypothetical legacy fight out of the frame now, Crawford could focus on other champions to become undisputed in 3 divisions. Meanwhile, Alvarez fights Berlanga on September 14.
