The dream is over, and it will take some time for the reality to sink in. The highly anticipated Terence Crawford – Canelo Alvarez showdown, which was in work for months, has been scrapped. A few days ago, several reports indicated that the fighters were near confirming a September fight date. However, that is old news now. Earlier today, The Ring Magazine reported that the talks between the parties have fallen apart, shelving the fight.

This has raised a question mark over the Mexican star’s future. Just a few days ago, the Guadalajara native was planning a financially stacked year. However, all those plans are up in the air as of this moment. Reportedly, the unified super middleweight champion is still targeting his usual two fights per year, and he has some work to do if he wants to achieve it. So who will he fight instead?

Jake Paul

Believe it or not, many fans believe that the reason why the Crawford fight got scrapped is because of rumors of ongoing negotiations between Canelo and Jake Paul‘s camp. Rumors suggest Canelo’s team is speaking to the YouTuber’s teams for a fight for the Cinco De Mayo date in May.

The Problem Child has been calling out Canelo since his fight against Mike Tyson. While it is simply too soon to say whether the reports are true or not, this bout has the potential to break several gate records. At least that is what Eddie Hearn and other boxing insiders believe. If Canelo Alvarez forgets about legacy and just wants to fight for money, this is the best fight he could go for. However, he still has some unfinished business left in the professional ring.

David Benavidez

Well, as Canelo Alvarez has stated multiple times, he is allowed to pick fights he wants, but the boxing world needs this fight. No one wants Canelo to retire with this huge question mark on his legacy. David Benavidez has been chasing a fight against the Mexican star for years now.

However, the unified super middleweight champion rejected the fight, claiming that he didn’t like the way Benavidez’s camp approached the fight. At this moment, Canelo has no desire to move up and the Bandera Roja has earned himself an undisputed light heavyweight championship shot. But the duo hasn’t shut the doors on the fight, especially Benavidez who wants the fight to now happen at a catchweight for the undisputed 168 and 175 lbs title.

The potential bout has the chance to not only steal any show but define Mexican boxing legacy as well. Accepting this fight can be a risky choice for Canelo, but not choosing will definitely put his legacy in question.

Canelo Alvarez undisputed again?

Now that the Guadalajara native has a free calendar, he can target that undisputed title once again. Many feel Canelo will face William Scull, the IBF champion to become undisputed once again. Scull was Canelo’s IBF mandatory last year, but he chose to face Edgar Berlanga instead. That proved to be a wise decision in financial terms. However, he had to give up his IBF title, something he would like to get his hands back on.

Scull has recently started a rivalry with Berlanga. But if Canelo Alvarez comes knocking, there is no way he will deny that fight. Furthermore, the IBF champion looks like the safest choice for ‘Cinnamon.’ He doesn’t have to be as wary of Scull as Benavidez and this fight won’t attract nearly as much criticism as Jake Paul.
