The subplots in the mega plot seem to be making their appearances. Otherwise, try explaining Terence Crawford‘s decision to respond when an old video of Canelo Alvarez questioning his career resurfaced. As the story thickens, fans can expect more such twists in the days to come. For now, nothing has been finalized. But several reports suggest that the mega Canelo-Crawford showdown has moved closer to becoming a reality.

Fans must be counting their lucky stars. The situation is certainly better than it was before. Late last year, a much-publicized disagreement erupted between Canelo Alvarez and His Excellency Turki Alalshikh after the Mexican superstar set a hefty purse as a precondition for stepping into the ring against Terence Crawford. The Nebraskan southpaw later joined the back-and-forth. Fortunately, things began to improve, with the new year kicking off on a positive note, as Alvarez and HE Alalshikh were spotted meeting in London. Some may interpret Crawford’s latest swipe as a subtle boost to the hype surrounding the potential fight.

To ‘Bud’ Crawford, what Canelo Alvarez said just sounded downright ‘crazy.’ “So every fighter I’ve fought is not good but one?” asked the first-ever two-time undisputed champion among men. Wait a minute – what exactly did Canelo say that irked Crawford enough to vent about it on Twitter?

Here’s the context: Canelo Alvarez was speaking with TMZ Sports sometime before his fight against Jermell Charlo. During the conversation, the reporter complimented Alvarez on his remarkable career and asked, “Are you tired of people asking you about Terence yet?

A smile spread across the super middleweight champion’s face. “Not – look,” he began, expressing how much respect he had for Terence Crawford. But then came the twist: “He just won one big fight.” Clearly, he was referring to Crawford’s high-profile showdown against Errol Spence Jr., which had taken place just a few months earlier.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Canelo Alvarez underestimating Terence Crawford, or is Crawford's record not as impressive as it seems?

Alvarez quipped, “If you see his record, he just beat one god fighter like Errol Spence, but other than that, I don’t think he’s been in with other great fighters like Spence. He did a really good job with Spence; he did like almost look very easy.” The Mexican superstar, however, concluded his response with a hint of suspense: “You know, you never know in boxing. We’ll see,” he said.

Noted,” read Terence Crawford’s tweet. Perhaps with the intention of keeping everyone guessing, he added a prompt. “Just remember what you said, because I’ve always had the joy in making somebody’s look like nobody’s.😉,” taunted the former welterweight champion.

The tough test of weight that lies before the switch hitter

Understandably, given his position and exceptional skills, Terence Crawford exudes supreme confidence. Few doubt that a fight with Canelo Alvarez would be anything but competitive. Crawford will undoubtedly step into the ring prepared for a challenge. But there’s one major hurdle: despite his move to 154 pounds, he would need to climb two more weight classes to fight Alvarez. As Mike Coppinger shared, the fight – if finalized – will take place at 168 pounds.

Speaking of old, resurfaced videos, one might also revisit Mike Tyson‘s words of caution. Reflecting on how Crawford’s fight against Israil Madrimov unfolded, Tyson made it clear during a podcast interview that he wasn’t thrilled about the idea of Crawford facing Alvarez. Fans can expect many more exciting and thought-provoking exchanges in the days and weeks to come. Until then, they’ll need to hold tight and wait for the fight to be officially finalized.
