Terence Crawford Details Why the Errol Spence Jr Fight Happened at “The Best Time”

Terence Crawford has established his presence in the history books of boxing. The fight was deemed to be a 50-50 contest by many boxing experts and fans. Crawford turned the whole bout into a one-sided domination. To everyone’s surprise, ‘Bud’ secured the victory against Errol Spence Jr by a ninth-round Knockout. At first, many questioned whether Crawford’s technical prowess could sustain the powerful punches of Spence Jr, and the answer is a sure yes. Post his fight, he recently hopped on to The Breakfast Club podcast to talk about his victory.

The fight generated great revenue for both fighters, and the PPV sales are estimated to be around $650,000. Well, Crawford is quite happy with the sales, and before this, he even spoke to Tyson about how he cares about money more than fame. So, he definitely received what he’d wanted from the Spence fight. In the latest episode of The Breakfast Club, the famous American radio host, Charlamagne tha God, stated how Crawford’s every punch on Spence’s body felt too personal. So he asked him if a weight was off his chest after he won the bout. Crawford agreed to this analysis, and said, “After the fight, I felt relieved because now it’s behind me.”

Then later, he added that throughout the training, Crawford kept on telling his team that this fight couldn’t have happened at a better time. He said, “I told everybody it’s happening at the best time because if we’d have fought sooner, it probably wouldn’t have been as big“. Also, he added how at first, they’d have only fought for two belts. The stakes of losing would’ve been lower than what they had on July 29th, 2023.

This fight made Crawford the first man in boxing to have been an Undisputed champion in two different divisions. Before Welterweight, Crawford had also been the WBO Lightweight champion and the Undisputed Light Welterweight champion. ‘Bud’ expressed his disappointment towards the media and how they had always projected as if he was ducking Spence in the entire 5-years build-up to this bout.

Crawford goes off on media for being targeted

So, in the same interview, before he spoke about the ideal time for the Spence fight, the Omaha native stated how he was getting blamed by the media even after trying so hard to make the bout happen. He realized that fighting Spence remained a necessity a long time ago especially when his kids came and asked if he was ever going to fight him. In his words, he knew “It hit home so it’s like man this dude gotta fight“.

Despite his intentions, Crawford revealed that the media always portrayed him as the bad guy. They blamed him for every negotiation that fell apart. He enunciated, “I always try to do everything in my power and my will to make the fight happen and the media blamed me. Out of all people, they always blame me.” He pointed out that Errol Spence Jr and PBC were never under their radar. It was him and Top Rank who were always put on the cross of fire.
