Is Terence Crawford right in calling Teofimo Lopez 'trash,' or is he just stirring the pot?

Terence Crawford and Teofimo Lopez haven’t exactly been friends since ‘The Takeover’ took shots at the former multi-divisional undisputed champion back in January this year. While ‘Bud’ Crawford has returned the favor before, his jabs at Lopez haven’t stopped yet. This time, he branded the WBO super lightweight champion “Trash”.

Alright, the thing is, before the Brooklyn born boxer fought Jamaine Ortiz in February, he had a strong desire to move up in weight to fight Terence Crawford. Something he repeated after beating unknown boxer Steve Claggett in June. So, ‘Bud’ Crawford, who will face Israil Madrimov on August 3rd in Los Angeles, appeared in an interview with Sports Center where he said nice things about others, but Lopez got the harsh end of the stick.

Terence Crawford is on a roll!

In a video uploaded to X, a reporter probed Crawford with several names from boxing to get his thoughts about them. Starting with Crawford’s former sparring partner and friend Shakur Stevenson, Crawford didn’t waste time to suggest he was great. And the answer remained the same when the reporter brought up Gervonta Davis and Isaac Cruz.

However, when the reporter asked Crawford about Teofimo Lopez, Crawford, visibly repulsed by the mention of Lopez’s name, branded the boxer “Trash”. It’s worth mentioning that Crawford was in the arena for Lopez’s bout against Ortiz in February, and when asked about potentially facing Lopez by Fight Hype TV, ‘Bud’ said, “F**k Teo”.

Regardless, when the reporter asked Crawford about Canelo Alvarez, Devin Haney, Jaron Ennis, and Israil Madrimov, the Nebraska native called them great. Since Crawford is chasing a bout against Canelo by moving weight classes, it’s unlikely that Lopez would get his dream fight. But the question is, what did Teofimo Lopez say that has Crawford pissed even today?

Teofimo Lopez tries to discredit Crawford’s achievements

Back in January, Lopez appeared in an interview with Boxing Social, where Lopez said, “The fighters that Crawford fought were handicapped. Errol Spence just announced about his [cataract] in his eye”. Crawford defeated Errol Spence Jr. last year to collect all the belts at the welterweight division. Turning to Crawford’s fight against Jose Benavidez, Lopez highlighted Benavidez got shot in the leg before the fight.

But that incident happened in 2016, and Crawford fought Benavidez in late 2018. Similarly, Lopez pointed at Kell Brook‘s eye socket fracture in 2017 before Crawford fought him in late 2020. This led Lopez to conclude that Crawford just fights injured boxers to guarantee his victories, adding, “I’m healthy. Fight the best fighter at a healthier weight”.

Having said that, Terence Crawford seems to have respect for even his potential opponents, but that doesn’t include Teofimo Lopez. Crawford didn’t just refuse to give Lopez a shot at his belts, but also didn’t recognize him as a good boxer. Do you agree with him?
