2023 was an exciting year for boxing. The fans finally got to witness fights that were in the negotiation phase for what seemed like time immemorial. One such memorable contest was between Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr. At the time, this fight was the talk of the town, and rightfully so. Both combatants were undefeated at that time, and a class apart from everyone else in the welterweight division. The betting odds were close and appeared to be a game of inches. However, when it came to fight night, things did not pan out as expected.
‘Bud,’ outclassed Spence in every regard and ultimately got the stoppage win in the ninth round. The win solidified his legacy as an all-time great. By extension, it was inevitable for him to receive the fruits of his labor. But alongside him, his trainer, Brian McIntyre also received plaudits for his hard work.

Prestige, wealth, and fame. Bud has it all. The former undisputed welterweight champion has broken and created records. Most recently, he won the 2023 Ring Magazine Performance of the Year award. Last year, he only competed once; and the performance was impressive enough to win the award. After all, the dominating win over Spence crowned him as the first men’s two-weight undisputed champion. Meanwhile, McIntyre was praised for his contributions towards the success of ‘Bud.’ Boxing reporter Michael Benson took to X and reported, “Terence Crawford has been announced as the winner of the 2023 Ring Magazine Performance of the Year award after stopping Errol Spence and his coach Brian ‘BoMac’ McIntyre has been announced as the winner of the 2023 Ring Magazine Trainer of the Year award.”

McIntyre has a history of working with a long line of elite-level boxers apart from Terence Crawford which includes former world champions Amir Khan, Jamel Herring and Maurice Hooker. He is also currently training lightweight prospect Keshawn Davis. Reportedly in 2019, the famed coaching trio of McIntyre, Esau Dieguez, and Red Spikes padded up a 12-0 record with no losses coming from their stable of fighters who thrived under their coaching.
The above feats are a testament to Crawford and ‘Bomac’s’ greatness in boxing. Crawford is now 36 years old but appears to have a lot of fight left in him. Not to mention, his ambition just keeps on getting bigger. However, before he does anything new, he has to make history repeat itself.
What is next for Terence Crawford?
In Crawford’s last fight deal, there was a rematch clause that either party was permitted to activate if they deemed fit. Moreover, Spence Jr., after his devastating defeat, has activated this clause and is eager to avenge his loss. However, Crawford appears to be confident but that does not mean he will underestimate ‘The Truth.,’. Interestingly, Spence went under the knife for an eye surgery and hinted at the fact that his eye problem played a part in his loss to Crawford.

However, ‘Bud,’ responded to the new development in his rivalry with Spence calmly. He stated on X, “
I done heard it all now @ErrolSpenceJr it’s ok tho because all in all I’m glad it’s over and done with. I wish you well ma brotha.”The level of discourse goes to show that Crawford is not only a great champion but exhibits true sportsmanship at all times. Do you share a similar sentiment?
