It is a well-known fact in the realm of boxing that nobody is as verbose as Teofimo Lopez. He is a phenomenal boxer, but you have to admit the guy knows how to draw attention to himself. Every time he fights, he treats the crowd to a celebration both in the lead-up as well as fight night. After a win, he dances, backflips, and puts on a fun show to cap off the occasion. He surely knows how to sell himself. The same can be said about his walkout music as well.

Given his elegant flair, the boxer makes sure to walk to the ring with a bang. Lopez is very particular about his walkout songs. The WBO super lightweight world champion is set to face Steve Claggett on June 29th, at the James L. Knight Center in Miami, Florida. Before that, let’s look at the tracks he has previously used to make his entry stand out.

Jamaine Ortiz

Saying that Lopez is the best showman would be overkill, but the man did come out roaring in his most recent bout against Jamaine Ortiz. In fact, he chose the theme song from Hugh Jackman’s movie ‘The Greatest Showman’. There was a sword swallower, a juggler, and ladies dancing as part of the entry with a circus motif. ‘Entry of the Gladiators’ by Czech composer Julius Fučík was played during this circus performance. Then came the ‘The Greatest Showman’ theme song, and ‘The Takeover’ finally came out in a red & golden tailcoat, with a black top hat. The music was apt considering the event was dubbed, “The Showman Returns”.

The New York native’s October 2020 clash with Ukrainian boxing icon Vasyl Lomachenko is widely considered the biggest bout of Lopez’s career. He stunned the world as he defeated the Ukrainian boxing phenom via unanimous decision at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Before entering the ring, Lopez made a solid entry as he walked out to ‘Go to Sleep’ by Eminem featuring DMX and Obie Trice.

Masayoshi Nakatani

Jay-Z and Kanye West’s ‘Ni**as in Paris’ gave the swaggering groove as ‘The Takeover’ was approaching the ring. He seemed confident as he was smiling and dancing to the beats of the song while walking towards the ring. The Takeover put up a spectacular performance and won the July 2019 fight against Masayoshi Nakatani via a unanimous decision.

The Magic of Madison Square Garden for Teofimo Lopez

Josh Taylor

Before taking on Ortiz, Lopez fought Josh Taylor in June last year. Teofimo Lopez entered the ring to the rhythm of “Juicy” by The Notorious B.I.G. at Madison Square Garden Theater at MSG in his hometown of Brooklyn. The crowd was ecstatic, roaring with excitement as Lopez made a stunning entrance. He won that bout with a one-sided unanimous decision victory.

George Kambosos Jr.

The orthodox fighter has only suffered one defeat in his career until now, at the hands of George Kambosos Jr. However, he deserves credit for his ring walk. Lopez made his entrance to Roy Jones Jr.’s “Y’all Must’ve Forgot II,” featuring MB3Five and SM Bullett. He disrobed and made his way to the ring as a Spartan from Greece. The irony of this situation is that Kambosos Jr.’s parents are originally from Greece. Even Kambosos Jr. must have been taken aback to see Lopez dressed like a Spartan.

Richard Commey

‘The Takeover’ picked the ideal song for his fight with Richard Commey in December 2019, which took place in his hometown at the Madison Square Garden in New York. He stepped out to Jay Z’s ‘Empire State of Mind,’ featuring Alicia Keys, as the crowd surged to the lines, “In New York, concrete jungle where dreams are made of, there’s nothing you can’t do.” The New Yorkers in the audience also celebrated and whistled when their local hero stopped Commey in the second round to win the IBF lightweight title.

You must have gathered till now that the boxer is the happiest when he gets a chance to fight at Madison Square Garden in front of his home crowd. He picked Frank Sinatra’s ‘New York New York’ as his walkout song in his April 2019 clash with Edis Tatli. The Brooklyn boy danced his way to the ring as he enjoyed the music while making his way to the squared circle. He ended the bout with a powerful knockout punch in the fifth round.

Having said that, Teofimo Lopez’s fans are excited to see him back in action this Saturday. Meanwhile, which walkout tune did you like from the songs listed above?
