Up until today, Teofimo Lopez was just demanding a fight against former undisputed welterweight champion Terence Crawford. But now, the WBO super lightweight champion feels his win over Ukrainian boxing legend Vasyl Lomachenko is far bigger than Crawford’s trashing of Errol Spence Jr., where he created history by becoming the first male boxer to hold undisputed status in two weight divisions.
‘The Takeover’ is coming off a unanimous decision win over Steve Claggett on 29th June, and immediately set his sights on bigger challenges, eyeing a showdown with Terence Crawford. In a candid interview with ES News, shared on YouTube today, the Las Vegas native boldly asserted that his accomplishments eclipse those of Crawford.

Speaking to Lopez, a bunch of reporters surrounding him asked about his plans for the future, a conversation Lopez managed to stir towards a possible fight against Terence Crawford. Even though Crawford is currently at 154-pounds and looking to secure a bout against Canelo Alvarez, Lopez seemed clear in his ambition to convince Crawford into the ring.
That’s when Elie Seckbach from ES News asked him if his victory over ‘Loma’ was more significant than Crawford’s win against Spence.. A confident Lopez didn’t really take much time in responding, stating, “Me over Loma because when he fought Spence.. Spence was at his end. When I fought Loma, I fought him at his best. [When Loma was] top tier, P4P #1. Can’t nobody beat that, EVER”.
When Lopez faced off against Lomachenko, the Ukrainian maestro was 32, and in Crawford’s showdown with Spence Jr., the Texan warrior was 33. Age-wise, neither bout saw a decisive edge in experience or ability. Regardless, this isn’t the first time ‘The Takeover’ has fired shots at ‘Bud’ Crawford or the quality of his opposition.

Teofimo Lopez says beating Lomachenko is bigger than Crawford beating Spence Jr.—Is he right?
Have an interesting take?
Back in January of this year, Lopez didn’t hold back as he took a shot at Crawford, alleging that the pound-for-pound star tends to choose opponents who are less than their best, often due to lingering injuries. Among those pointed out was Errol Spence Jr., who underwent cataract surgery following a serious car accident back in 2019. Lopez’s remarks underscored his belief that Crawford’s path to greatness might be less challenging than it appears on paper.
Lopez told Boxing Social, “The fighters that Crawford fought were handicapped. Errol Spence just announced about his [cataract] in his eye”. He further added that Crawford fought Jose Benavidez Jr. after he got shot in the leg back in August 2016. Lopez went as far as to point out Kell Brook‘s eye socket fracture in 2017.

Despite what Terence Crawford has managed to achieve in the sport over his highly decorated career, it seems, Teofimo Lopez doesn’t feel Crawford has achieved as much as him. While a fight between them seems unlikely, such statements might just convince ‘Bud’ to lace up the gloves against Lopez. Do you think ‘Bud’ should fight Lopez?
