Picture this: an erupting volcano, with a single man daring to leap across the seething lava. No, this isn’t the plot of the latest blockbuster action movie. In fact, it’s the metaphorical scene set by a recent interview with the boxing world’s firestarter, Teofimo Lopez. The unified Lightweight champion leapt into a pool of controversy. He made an explosive statement.
‘The Takeover’ asserted that his fellow fighter, Gervonta “Tank” Davis, one of the boxing arena’s most ferocious talents, is ‘not a boxer.’ Bold? Yes. Provocative? Absolutely. But before you write off his statement as a mere publicity stunt, take a moment to digest the gravity of his words. Lopez’s critique of Davis is a daring leap across boxing’s fiercely debated landscape. It is likely to set the boxing community ablaze.

In the interview with Fight Hub TV, Lopez didn’t hold back in his assessment of Gervonta Davis’s boxing skills. He responded to the interviewer’s question by making his feelings on the matter abundantly clear.
He stated, “Yeah what do you think Tank is gonna do, press me. And if he doesn’t press me, he’ll try to box me and he’s not good at boxing. He’s not a boxer see people don’t understand this tank is not a boxer. He grew up from head bangers in the in DC and they used to put a tyre in the middle, put their foot in the middle of that tyre and bang it up in DC. So, I mean ah man it just doesn’t work that way.”

Lopez continued, “You can’t like I said before the trainer that Josh Taylor had was telling him good instructions on how to change the game but Josh couldn’t do it. Why? Because like I said when you get punched, when you get hit, all that training that you did with that new coach goes out the window and you go right back to what you knew before. It will always be that way it never changes. That’s why tank doesn’t call me out, that’s why none of these guys really call me out. Only reason why Haney calls me out is just because he needs some clout to get his followers up.”
The essence of this Brooklyn born boxer’s critique hinged on his perspective of what constitutes a genuine boxer. He made it abundantly clear that he doesn’t believe Davis fits into this category. He referred to Davis’s upbringing and training in DC as the basis for his argument. This statement contradicts what his father said about Gervonta Davis.
