Last weekend’s Ring Magazine Awards event was a star-studded affair in London. However, not everyone seemed to be present there. One notable absence was Gervonta Davis, who was pointedly not invited by His Excellency Turki Alalshikh, the event’s orchestrator. While the reasons for his exclusion remain unclear, Davis was quick to take to social media to address the snub. The absence of Davis at the prestigious gala set the stage for Terence Crawford to make a public jab. Crawford took to X, stating, “I see somebody mad they weren’t invited to the @ringmagazine gala. 😂😂” This unassumingly harmless dig set off a chain reaction that no one in the boxing world was ready for.

The situation took an unexpected and personal turn when Gervonta Davis, furious at what he saw as disrespect from Crawford, retaliated by dragging Crawford’s family into the public spat. In his now-deleted tweet, the 30-year-old made the situation personal by attacking Crawford’s family, including his wife, Alindra Person, and even referencing his children. Davis remarked, “And he got like 8 kids and his wife like 380 lbs.. Yeah, buddy gotta work overtime..🤣.” What followed was a rapid escalation of insults, accusations, and even a few outside voices like Teofimo Lopez jumping into the fray.

Gervonta Davis slammed for going too far

The initial back-and-forth between Tank Davis and Bud Crawford seemed to be just another social media spat between two high-profile boxers, but it quickly escalated. Boxing trainer Greg Hackett, who spoke out on the situation recently with YSM Sports Media, criticized Gervonta Davis for dragging Terence Crawford’s family into their feud. He explained, “From my understanding, Tank wasn’t talking about Bud in the beginning… but when Tank said about his chick, that’s like different. That hit home. Because that’s not just his girl—that’s his old lady. When a chick meets your status of ‘old lady,’ it’s because you’ve been through so much with her.”

Hackett emphasized that while Davis was justified in being upset about Crawford’s initial comment, attacking someone’s family, especially their spouse and children, crosses a certain line. Boxing is a sport where rivalries are expected, but when personal attacks extend to family members, it takes the situation to a darker, more disrespectful level. “It’s like Bud man, he gotta really say something or do something. That’s the corny part. Something might happen that don’t have to happen,” Greg Hackett said, lamenting at how the situation escalated.

Boxing matchmaker, Rick Glaser also weighed in, calling Davis’ remarks “classless.” “Very low by Tank Davis @Gervontaa, bringing Terence Crawford’s @terencecrawford family into it, you never ever bring family into it. EVER!!! Classless move,” wrote Glaser in a bold rebuke.

Just as the situation between Davis and Crawford reached a boiling point, another name entered the conversation: Teofimo Lopez.

Is Teofimo Lopez fanning the flames?

Lopez too criticized Tank for dragging in Terence Crawford’s family in their squabble. “You all trying to save face for Abdul Wahid(Gervonta Davis) when ya know he messed up talking about Bud family,” he wrote in a post on X. This may look commendable since Teofimo Lopez stood up for Bud. However, that is not what Lopez was doing, according to Gregg Hackett.

In the clip, Hackett claimed, “Teofimo Lopez is a stone-cold p***y. The reason I am saying that is because he also tweeted something about, ‘Oh yall better not. I see what y’all tryna do to water shit down to Tank. Y’all give him the same heat y’all was giving me.’ Like bro, mind your business!” Hackett criticized Teofimo Lopez for getting involved, saying, “Stop trying to spice sh*t to get the heat off yourself.” Hackett implied that Lopez was trying to deflect attention from his own controversies by stoking the fire between Davis and Crawford.

For those who may not know what Hackett is talking about, here is a bit of history. Last year around September, Teofimo Lopez made headlines for a racially insensitive comment he made in an interview with Broadway Joel. When asked about who he wanted to fight next, between Terence Crawford and Gervonta Davis, Lopez responded, “Whichever monkey wants to get the banana.” He added, “They say they are gorillas, I’m a lion—I eat them.” This comment drew heavy criticism, with many fans and critics accusing Teofimo Lopez of using a racial slur. Lopez, however, never fully addressed the fallout from his statement, and the controversy seemed to fade from the public eye.

What Hackett finds hypocritical is Lopez’s sudden defense of Crawford when just a few months ago, he was embroiled in his own racially charged controversy. According to Hackett, Lopez seemed to be attempting to shift the focus from his past misstep onto Gervonta Davis, portraying himself as an innocent bystander while simultaneously inflaming the feud. “Like you trying to get the stain off yourself and put it on Tank. Leave that sh*t alone,” stated Hackett, criticizing Lopez for fanning the flames.

As this situation continues to unfold, fans are left wondering: Was Gervonta Davis justified in dragging Crawford’s family into the feud, or did he cross a line?
