Ever since Saudi sports mogul His Excellency Turki Alalshikh gave the green light for a potential showdown between Terence Crawford and Canelo Alvarez, the fight has become the talk of the town. Scheduled for September in Las Vegas, the highly anticipated bout captured the attention of fans and analysts alike. It was just a few days ago, that the Guadalajara native’s training video went viral. Now, team Crawford, too, has been stepping into the spotlight.

Terence Crawford’s camp is eager to make their own statement. The pound-for-pound king seems to be preparing to take down one of the best in the world. In a recent interview, Crawford’s trainer, Brian “Bomac” McIntyre, weighed in on the looming clash.

Bomac on Terence Crawford’s mindset and strategy

Matt Lenihan from Boxing Social recently spoke with Bomac about Bud Crawford’s approach to the fight. Lenihan began by commenting on Crawford’s already-cemented legacy. He noted that Crawford’s career was practically guaranteed a spot in the Hall of Fame, regardless of what happens next. Yet, despite this, the prospect of a fight with the WBC and WBO World Super Middleweight Champion is still generating massive interest.

The interviewer mentioned how Canelo had previously downplayed the 41-0, 31 KO’s achievements, particularly after his dominant win over Errol Spence Jr. in July 2023 for the WBC, WBO, and IBF World Welter belt.

Bomac responded firmly, defending Crawford’s record and accomplishments. He pointed out that people often criticize Crawford for not facing big names early in his career, but as soon as Crawford fights them, they seem to lose their relevance. “They were something until Crawford fought him. So, obviously, he doing a great job. He’s making everybody look normal.” Bomac added confidently, emphasizing Crawford’s ability to make his opponents look ordinary, thus elevating his status in the sport.

When it comes to the specifics of a fight with Canelo, Bomac made it clear that the WBO Interim World Super Welterweight Champion has no reservations about facing the Unified Super Middleweight Champion. The Southpaw from Omaha has expressed that he wants no stipulations, including a rehydration clause because he is confident in his skills and ready to take on the challenge in its purest form. Bomac’s remark, “Let’s go test ourselves,” signals nothing but the fact that Crawford is eager to prove he is the best, regardless of the size advantage the 34-year-old might have.

Anyway, it seems like not just Bomac, but Top Rank honcho Bob Arum, who worked closely with Crawford in the past, also had to voice his thoughts on the upcoming showdown.

What’s your perspective on:

Can Crawford's ambidextrous style outsmart Canelo's power, or is he biting off more than he can chew?

Bob Arum weighs in on Crawford’s advantage

According to Arum, Crawford holds a distinct advantage due to his “ambidextrous” boxing style. Arum explained that Crawford’s ability to seamlessly switch between orthodox and southpaw stances confuses opponents, who typically train for only one style.

Arum went on to express his belief that Crawford’s versatility is one of his biggest assets, even suggesting that Crawford could have beaten a prime Floyd Mayweather Jr., had they met in their respective primes. Although Crawford and Arum parted ways professionally, Arum’s admiration for the fighter remains unwavering. The veteran promoter’s comments add fuel to the fire, highlighting just how dangerous Crawford can be when he’s in top form.

As Terence Crawford’s potential fight with Canelo Alvarez looms on the horizon, it’s clear that both camps are using every opportunity to hype up the fight. Will Crawford’s ambidextrous style be the key to overcoming the unified super middleweight champion? And perhaps most importantly, what will this fight mean for Crawford’s legacy?
