The ‘Bite Fight’ happened 26 years ago, on June 28, 1997, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. What was a regular high-stakes match turned into a fight that went down the annals of boxing. This fight is to date credited as the most controversial fight. This is because Mike Tyson bit off a piece of Evander Holyfield’s ear in the third round, shocking everyone.
Furthermore, ‘Iron Mike’ suffered grave repercussions. Not only was he disqualified, he had to render a $3 million fine, and suffer a temporary ban from boxing. However, a recent discussion in his podcast “Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson” raised questions about the fine he paid for his actions. In a recent podcast episode, he invited the Australian Tennis player Nick Kyrgios. Kyrgios is known for his influential and unpredictable style of play, as well as his controversial and often polarizing behavior on and off the court. While Nick discussed his experience with staggering fines, the youngest Heavyweight champion took the opportunity to throw light on what happened with the fines of his fight. So, Nick said that he paid fines worth 500k dollars and they all went to charity. Just then, Tyson admitted that the fines got him. Furthermore, he elaborated on how the fines were used to fill the commission pockets.
The discussion started when Nick said, “The fans have always supported me, and I’ve accumulated almost $500,000 in fines. I’ve done things my way, and that’s why I admire people like Dennis Rodman.” To this, ‘Iron Mike’ said, “The fine’s got me. Mine was filling those guys’ commission pockets…H*ll yeah. 3 million 6 million bucks won’t go to any god damn charity.”
However, one question that still lingers and confuses fans is why Mike bit Holyfield’s ear.
What led to the ‘Bite Fight?’
The match started, and Holyfield took control. He won the first three rounds. At 2:19 of round one, an overhand right punch from Holyfield stunned Tyson. In round two, 32 seconds in, Holyfield ducked a punch from Tyson. Their heads clashed accidentally, causing a large cut over Tyson’s eye.
Tyson had complained about headbutting in their first fight. Referee Mills Lane reviewed replays and declared the headbutts accidental. Before round three, Tyson left his corner without his mouthpiece. Lane noticed and ordered Tyson to put it back. The third round then started. With 40 seconds left, Holyfield clinched Tyson. Seconds later, Tyson bit off a piece of Holyfield’s right ear and spat it out. Furthermore, in an interview with Fox News, Mike said, “I bit him because I wanted to kill him…I was really mad about my head being bumped and everything….I really lost consciousness of the whole fight.”
The ‘Bite Fight’ between Tyson and Holyfield still shocks fans 26 years later. The fight remains a hot topic, and the question of why Tyson bit Holyfield continues to intrigue.
