From setbacks to glory, has Coco Gauff finally silenced her critics with this victory?

American tennis star Coco Gauff had a disappointing summer, but the WTA tour proved to be a turning point for the 20-year-old to end the year on a high note. Meanwhile, Mike Tyson’s daughter, Milan Tyson, has reacted to Gauff’s latest achievement.

Despite a tough start in the Riyadh final against China’s Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen, Gauff fought back fiercely. She overcame a break in the second set and twice down a break in the third, ultimately prevailing in a gritty three-hour, four-minute showdown, winning 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(2).

With this hard-fought victory, Gauff secured her third title of the season, her first at the WTA Finals, and her ninth career singles title. This win also made her the youngest player to capture the season-ending WTA Finals since Maria Sharapova, who achieved the feat two decades ago.

Leaving Saudi Arabia as the tournament’s inaugural champion with over $4.8 million in prize money, Coco Gauff became the first American to win the WTA Finals since Serena Williams defeated Simona Halep in 2014.

Gauff took to Instagram, noting, “An honor,” to mark the achievement. Notably, she also became the youngest player since Maria Sharapova in 2006 to defeat the world’s top two players, Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Świątek, in the same event.

Regardless, reacting to Gauff’s Serena-like accomplishment, Mike Tyson’s tennis-fanatic daughter, Milan Tyson, reacted enthusiastically on social media with, “Periodddd.” Meanwhile, Gauff reflected on her season after winning the glimmering silver trophy.

It’s been a long season for Coco Gauff

Gauff’s year started strong with a title in Auckland and a run to the semi-finals at the Australian Open, but soon after, the momentum waned. A fourth-round exit at Wimbledon, followed by a third-round defeat at the Paris Games, marked the beginning of a series of setbacks.

Struggles continued as she faced early exits in Toronto and Cincinnati, cutting her U.S. Open title defense short, and she was stunned by a fourth-round loss to Emma Navarro in New York. Amid these challenges, Gauff parted ways with coach Brad Gilbert, a decision that marked a turning point.

Shortly after, she claimed her second WTA 1000 title at the China Open and advanced to the Wuhan Open semi-finals. Reflecting on her rollercoaster season following her WTA Finals victory, Gauff acknowledged, “It’s been a long season.”

She also took to X to share her thoughts, writing, “I know I tend to focus on ‘doubters/haters,’ but this one is really for all of my supporters! You’ve held it down for me win or lose… I know some of you are a little bit petty like me, so it does feel nice to silence them for a bit.”

That being said, while Coco Gauff managed to end the year on a high note, Mike Tyson’s daughter, Milan Tyson, was right beside her supporting Gauff from the sidelines. What did you think about Gauff’s season?
