Canelo Alvarez has learned from every fighter he has faced in his career, becoming better after each fight. However, Joe Rogan thinks Canelo’s biggest and most useful lesson came from Floyd Mayweather ten years ago, when two mammoths of boxing came face-to-face in a bout billed as ‘The One.’
‘Cinnamon’ went into the fight confident about emerging victorious by stopping ‘Money’ Mayweather. But ‘Money’ would ultimately take home the victory. In the resurfaced clip of his podcast, Joe praised ‘Money’ Mayweather’s defensive technique. “I think Floyd’s ability to shoulder roll and his ability to avoid shots and then land shots when you don’t think he can is unparalleled,” Joe said in the clip. He then referenced Canelo’s fight against Mayweather and explained how Canelo couldn’t hit him. According to Joe, “It was a life lesson” for Canelo that helped him improve his own skills.
Joe later explained Canelo’s head movement improved after the fight against Mayweather. He then elaborated on the same by giving an example from Canelo’s later fight against Daniel Jacobs. Joe’s analysis has solid ground. Canelo’s performance inside the ring improved drastically after the Mayweather fight. It was definitely a fight for the ages. The amount of money it generated was also astounding.

Back in September 2013, ‘Cinnamon’ took on the then Light Middleweight champion ‘Money’ Mayweather. The fight took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena with the WBA Super, WBC, and The Ring Light Middleweight titles on the line. In the sold-out venue before thousands of people, Mayweather won the bout via majority decision after 12 rounds.
The fight recorded 2.2 million PPV buys, totaling a whopping $150 million in revenue. It broke Mayweather’s previous PPV record against Oscar De La Hoya, which was $136 million. But the Canelo fight wasn’t the last record-breaking fight for Mayweather. In 2015, he fought Manny Pacquiao, generating $400 million, as per a report from Boxing News.
