Canelo Alvarez has been widely acknowledged as one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world, a title that has solidified with his constant domination in the ring against some of the toughest opponents in the sport. However, Dmitry Bivol gave a shocking performance and achieved a sound victory against the ‘Cinnamon’. Canelo did not stand a chance against Bivol who became the second person to defeat Alvarez. Though Alvarez can’t get his revenge against Floyd Mayweather, he is keen on getting back at Bivol.
In fact, he made his desire very clear, as he called out the light-heavyweight champion just after defeating his most recent opponent John Ryder. Recently, Canelo’s promoter Eddie Hearn delved a bit into the potential fight between the duo which may take place this September.

Eddie Hearn recently did an interview with Behind the Gloves’ Michelle Joy Phelps. Hearn also talked about the possibility of a fight between Canelo and Conor McGregor. Phelps asked Hearn if he could give some updates regarding Canelo vs Bivol fight. Hearn, however, refrained from disclosing any new detail regarding the fight.
The promoter revealed that the talks are still ongoing and didn’t have any new update on the situation. He said, “No only that talks are ongoing, that obviously is the September fight that Saul wants”. He said that the Bivol fight remains the priority. Hearn added, “He will consider other opportunities if he can’t land Dimitry Bivol, but that remains their priority”. Canelo’s team’s desire for the match against Bivol remains apparent in his statement.
It should be noted that Canelo went up in weight during his last fight, which was one of the reasons for the loss. So Bivol’s manager has revealed the Russian’s desire to have the fight at 168 lbs this time so that Canelo would have no excuses in case he loses. However, Canelo is adamant about the fight taking place at 175 lbs like last time. But it seems hard for Bivol to get the fight booked at his desired weight as WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman dropped cold water on his plans. He stated that the WBC won’t sanction the fight at 168 lbs as Russian boxers are currently banned due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine crisis. So if Bivol really wants a fight at 168 lbs, he would need to get an exemption from the sanctioning body.
Canelo’s comeback: A healed hand and renewed confidence
Saul Alvarez faced a tragic defeat as he moved up to the light heavyweight division to face Dmitry Bivol last year. However, the world only got to know one of the reasons behind his defeat after his trilogy fight against Gennady Golovkin. The champion was apparently in writhing pain ever since his fight against Caleb Plant in 2021. He chose to ignore the pain and went with it, however, he realized the seriousness of it when it started hurting too much. Alvarez prior to his fight against Ryder went under surgery and had his hands healed.
“It hurts everywhere. I had these issues since the Caleb Plant fight. I was like; it’s okay, it’s okay, later, later, then it started [to get] really bad. I need surgery”, Canelo revealed previously.

After his most recent victory, Canelo revealed that his hand is all better now. Although he was a bit skeptical during the opening rounds of the fight, it seems he feels that he is prepared for his rematch against Bivol now. Even though David Benavidez is also very keen on facing him, Canelo’s primary focus is still Bivol, as he plans on making a name for himself in the light heavyweight division.
