Subriel Matias wants to put the other champions at 140 in the dust. The message is loud and clear. After retiring his last two victims, Jeremias Ponce and Shohjahon Ergashev, he has set his heart on Teofimo Lopez. It seems there is one more name that the IBF champion wants to strike off, as he leaves a special message for Devin Haney‘s father.

Matias spoke at Matchroom Boxing’s press conference, where Eddie Hearn announced him as their new signee. After fighting under the PBC banner for years, the 31-year-old champion signed a multi-fight deal with Matchroom. The Puerto Rican champion brought the sizzling fire of his punches into his words too, as he issued a warning to other top fighters.

At 20-1, 20 KOs, ‘Browny’ is one of the most exciting fighters in 140 and, undoubtedly, the most explosive one. Recently, he has targeted the other champions in the division and engaged in a verbal spat with them. It was no different this time. Matias said, “My security and confidence in myself can be considered arrogant at times.”

“But if we’re talking about other fighters like Teofimo Lopez, Devin Haney, and I won’t even talk about Rolando Romero because he’s a comedian, I will face any opponent that is put in front of me. I will knock out and retire Lopez. And Haney, I don’t know, because he runs like a chicken,” Matias added.

Following this, Matias declared, “One message for Haney’s father. I’m sorry for the bad language. His b*lls are mine.” Similarly, in another clip from the evening, when asked about his hypothetical fight with Lopez, Matias was all smiles. He stated,I think my smile say everything and I’m going to make him quit and his dad is the one who is going to make him quit.”

While fighting the bigger names at 140 is in the plans, Matias has another fight to focus on. Eddie Hearn has already chalked out the path for Matias, and they have to make a pit stop in Puerto Rico for a homecoming. Reason? To capitalize on the Puerto Rican fan base and then the United States. So who is he fighting?

Matias’ next opponent and timeline revealed

Hearn disclosed that Richardson Hitchins (17-0, 7 KOs) will fight it out with Gustavo Daniel Lemos (29-0, 19 KOs) in an eliminator. The winner would then face Matias in June in Puerto Rico. The date and venue are yet to be decided. After that, Hearn plans to pit him against a big name at the end of the year. Could it be Teofimo Lopez? Only time will tell.
