There’s no doubt that, in the 140-pound weight class, Subriel Matias remains a force to be reckoned with. But the fact remains: despite spending nearly a decade in the ring, he has yet to bag that coveted big payday for himself. However, it seems things are about to change.

The 31-year-old ‘Pride of Maternillo’ became the IBF light welterweight champion nearly a year ago. He forced Jeremias Ponce into early retirement on February 25. Nine months later, on November 25, he successfully defended his title against Shohjahon Ergashev. But he wants more than that. He feels it’s high time he marked his name on the bigger stage. Probably to augment that, he took a bold step.

Taking the Big Plunge: Subriel Matias

An increasing number of news updates confirm that Subriel Matias has signed a ‘multi-fight and co-promotional deal’ with Matchroom Boxing. Through his X/Twitter handle, Eddie Hearn, the U.K.-based promotion’s head, wrote, “This is a huge signing. Welcome to the team, Subriel Matias, one bad bad man! @daznboxing.

The official account of Matchroom Boxing stated, “𝐃𝐎𝐍𝐄 𝐃𝐄𝐀𝐋 Welcome to the team, @subrielmatiaspr IBF 140lbs King Knockout Artist Fight News.Sharing his enthusiasm over the big move, Subriel Matias said, “I am very excited about the deal we’ve reached with Matchroom and DAZN.” Then he added how eagerly he wanted to share the story behind signing the deal. “I can’t wait to show all the big names out there and the world why this deal was made,” said the ‘Pride of Maternillo’.

Then he revealed that it was simply because there was no other fighter better than him in the 140-pound weight class. He said, “Because I am the best 140-pounder on the planet.” So per several accounts, Matias appears to be planning to take on the next challenger in front of his home crowd. It was on November 30, 2019, that he fought for the last time in Puerto Rico. So he didn’t hide his intentions, “And I will show this in front of my people, which makes me immensely happy. To my people in Puerto Rico, I will see you soon. And we will have a glorious boxing night.

One of the followers on Instagram seems aware of the upcoming IBF final title eliminator. Light welterweight prospect Richardson Hitchins will fight Gustavo Daniel Lemos in April to settle the argument. Perhaps combining both reports, they said, “Makes absolute sense; Hitchinson (Hitchins) is already on the Matchroom platform… way easier to make the fight now for the IBF title ‼️

Several outlets in the meantime have reported that talks are in place for a summer showdown. A fight between Subriel Matias and the unbeaten WBO global light welterweight champion Liam Paro.
