Barely a fortnight after he dispatched Shawn Porter, Errol Spence Jr. drank and drove his Ferrari Spider 488 without a seatbelt. Thrown out of the vehicle, the champ escaped by a hair’s breadth. Despite the injuries not being severe, Errol returned to ring only by December 20, 2020, to fend off Danny Garcia‘s challenge. A year-long hiatus later, Errol Spence Jr. knocked out Cuban Yordenis Ugas in July this year. Again, it seems hellhounds were waiting for a turn to strike. Only on this occasion, it took a fourteen-year teenager, who ignored a red light, to bang his parent’s car onto the champion’s.

As he walks away from a second vehicle accident with relatively minor injuries, Spence Jr. shared his bewilderment with Brian Custer from Showtime, “…But, I mean, I’m doing fantastic, man. It’s a shame that a child who’s only 14 years old stole his parents’ car and then, out of everyone else who was on the road, he crashed into me. You know, that’s a pretty sad turn of events. It’s really really bad that this happened, you know. You know, but I made it through, and you know that I’m doing fine these days, guy. You know, a few bumps and scrapes, and other little stuff like that.”

Errol Spence Jr. speculates a mid-2023 return

Fortunately, the head-on collision on December 10 wasn’t as severe as the October 2019 crash. Nevertheless, while revealing the details of a prospective fight with Keith Thurman, the Welterweight champion informed Custer he would have to take a break from boxing for a couple of months. 

He said, “Probably like around May or June – May or June, April, May or June“I’ve just gotta, you know, talk to my team, you know. Hopefully, you know, I’ll recover a hundred percent. I’m sure I’ll recover a hundred percent because I’ve been in worse accidents. I’ve been in worse accidents. But, you know, talk to my team, you know, and hopefully, come up with a day that suits both of us and make it happen.”

During the 2019 incident, his Ferrari overturned several times, resulting in facial and body injuries and dental problems. The champion entered a guilty plea for driving under the influence of alcohol. As a result, authorities revoked his driving license, besides handing over a three-day jail sentence. However, he received due consideration for the time he spent behind bars.

And only a few short months had gone by; the champion suffered another injury due to an accident. But, in contrast to the earlier collision, Errol’s vehicle was struck from behind. Then, with barely eleven days left, a tear in Spence’s left retina forced a pull out of a with none other than Manny Pacquiao in August last year.
