Almost five years have passed since Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor stepped foot into the squared circle. The event was one of the most unique in boxing history, captivating the audience for the sport’s first crossover event.

This led to many fans wondering if a second fight between the two would ever take place. The rumors only gained traction after a report by The Irish Mirror claimed that both parties were very close to making it happen. However, Showtime president Stephen Espinoza is still skeptical about the bout as he revealed the obstacle preventing this bout.
Showtime President reveals the real obstacle for the rematch
In an interview with FightHypeTV, Espinoza was asked about the potential for the rematch between Mayweather and McGregor actually taking place, after which he revealed the obstacle hindering the bout.
He stated that he wouldn’t go as far as confirming the fight and claimed that UFC might not be willing to make this fight,” I wouldn’t go that far. I think the UFC is still a major obstacle. I mean, having said that they were an obstacle the first time until they were convinced to go along with it.” He said,
However, he went on to add that the financial prospect of this fight was too big for them to not make this fight happen the first time, and Mayweather would always want to make the biggest fights possible.” I think in retrospect, I assume they’re pretty happy with certainly financial results if not the result of the fight. But you know Floyd is out there. He’s never gonna stop trying to do you know the biggest events possible. So I have no doubt that he’d be interested in it and I have no doubt it will be a huge worldwide event.” He said.
Lastly, he stated that it was a question of where the UFC would be willing to co-promote the event like the first bout, as McGregor is currently under contract with the promotion.

Floyd Mayweather vs Conor Mcgregor 2
The first fight between the two was one of boxings top grossing fights. It garnered around 4.2 million PPV buys, making it the second highest-selling fight in the sport’s history. The first fight was supposed to be an easy victory for Money, however, McGregor managed to take the boxing legend to 10-rounds before getting knocked out.

This was Mayweather’s last professional fight, after which he only competed in exhibition bouts. McGregor, on the other hand, went to fight in the UFC and is currently on a 2 fight-losing streak. If the second fight takes place, this will be a great chance for both fighters to earn some big bucks at the tail-end of their careers. Moreover, with the unexpected result of the first fight, a second fight could pose a surprise for boxing fans.
