Stephen A. Smith is not sure if he would like to see former unified Lightweight champion, Vasyl Lomachenko square off against the current WBA Lightweight champion, Gervonta Davis. After Gervonta Davis’ stunning eighth-round KO victory over Frank Martin, the former NBA analyst meditated over the potential opponents ‘Tank’ could face next. In this connection, by shedding light on what Lomachenko lacked, Smith ended up explaining why the Ukrainian would not survive against ‘Tank’ Davis.
Among other fights, one match the boxing world has been craving is Gervonta Davis vs. Devin Haney. However, Stephen A. Smith can already picture what ‘Tank’ will do to Haney, given that Ryan Garcia knocked down Devin Haney thrice to win the fight. At the same time, although he feels Vasyl Lomachenko is a “brilliant boxer,” Smith finds the two-time Olympic Gold medalist too “small” to confront ‘Tank’ Davis.
In his opinion, Gervonta Davis is excellent at getting inside of his opponent’s mind. Added to this, the boxer from Baltimore has endurance and can stand his ground in the ring. So, Stephen A. Smith continued, “My attitude is nobody has a shot against Gervonta Davis if you can’t punch with power.” So, does Smith mean Lomachenko can’t throw power? Not really.

“That is not to say that Lomachenko can’t punch with power [because] we saw what he did to Kambosos, beat the s**t out of him. But, I’m saying to you, against Gervonta Davis, I don’t know,” the analyst clarified on The Stephen A. Smith Show.

As per the 56-year-old, a fight between the two would be compelling. However, if Lomachenko were to step inside the ring against Davis, Smith would be worried about the Ukrainian getting potentially floored. Soon, the 56-year-old revealed the boxer who might be just the right opponent for ‘Tank’ Davis.
Who exceeds Vasyl Lomachenko in Stephen A. Smith’s eyes?
Although Ring Magazine has Vasyl Lomachenko above Gervonta Davis, Stephen A. Smith believes the Ukrainian is small and doesn’t possess the necessary power. So, who is the boxer possessing the required qualities to fight against Gervonta Davis? It is none other than Shakur Stevenson. With a height of 5′ 8″ and ten knockouts in twenty-one fights, Smith believes Shakur is the perfect fit. “Gervonta Davis is the number one box office attraction. Who I want to see him against is Shakur Stevenson,” he said.

“Shakur Stevenson, with all that noise made about him, deserves a shot,” he added. “I wanna see Gervonta Davis in the ring with somebody perceived as having enough power to put him on the canvas too. That’s what I wanna see. I don’t think Lomachenko gives us that. I think Shakur Stevenson might,” Smith concluded.
