The bitter online feud with Floyd Mayweather Jr., it seems, has pushed Gervonta Davis to a stage where a mere mention of his former mentor and promoter’s name is sufficient enough to draw the lightweight champion’s ire. One such instance came up late. A user seemingly highlighted the situation when ‘The Money’ was about to set off for a fight and ‘Tank’s current situation. As most fans know, Davis is about to embark on the year’s first fight.
The 29-year-old superstar of boxing returns on June 15 to take on Frank Martin. The title defense will occur at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas. Fans had been eagerly watching out for his comeback. After defeating Ryan Garcia in April last year, Gervonta Davis found himself in a legal bind. Fans have been witnessing him engage in an acerbic back-and-forth altercation with ‘The Money’. As is his usual practice, the lightweight champion seemingly deleted his response minutes after making it. So what set off Tank this time?

One of the users highlighted the sequence of events that unfolded in the lead-up to the 2014 Floyd Mayweather Jr. versus Marcos Maidana fight. Stressing how ‘The Money’ and his team outwitted the Argentine boxer before even the fight began. The user said, “Floyd truly was a smart fighter with a great team. He caught Maidana trying to come into the with fight horse-hair gloves with little to no padding. If Floyd would have lost and blamed it on gloves, they would’ve called him a excuse-maker.” Then they cited a similar case when Deontay Wilder raised an issue over Tyson Fury‘s gloves.

The tweet thread then led to the user addressing the WBA champion. Why? Probably the user might have thought of highlighting the kind of support the now-independent ‘Tank’ lacks beside him. Or that he falls way too short in comparison to Mayweather Jr. when it boils down to astuteness.
Anyway, they appear to be teasing Gervonta Davis that his fate is doomed. He picked up Frank Martin for an opponent. ‘The Ghost’ has the wherewithal to stop the Baltimorean according to the the user.
I’m not going to lie @Gervontaa I think you fcked up picking Frank he might stop you 👀

However, the warring WBA lightweight champion would have none of it. He shot back quickly, “Every time he post he looking at his body….dude just happy he look in shape for the summer; he’s getting his a** beat…” It’s unclear why Davis deleted his response this time. But judging from his usual behavior, it’s not that shocking either.
Tampered Tales
Before the first fight with Marcos Maidana on May 3, 2014, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and his team reportedly objected to the type of gloves ‘El Chino’ had picked. The padding in Maidana’s Everlast gloves had apparently piqued the American’s side. Finally, after rounds of talks, it was decided that the pair of gloves Maidana preferred would not be acceptable. However, a different pair from the same brand with a similar style was permissible.

Likewise, right from their rematch to the trilogy fight’s lead-up, Deontay Wilder reportedly raised some issues with the gloves Tyson Fury used. Through videos and statements made on social media, he seemingly alleged that ‘The Gypsy King’ has tampered with the gloves. However, by then Wilder had already lost the fight and everyone chalked up the issue to him being a sore loser.
Deontay Wilder and his team took issue with Tyson Fury’s gloves at the glove selection after the weigh-in last night. Commission official said, “Whatever Wilder says is not gonna change the fact these are approved, weighed, inspected gloves,” and insisted he can wear same.

Given the kind of virtual fracas Mayweather and Davis are involved in, such insinuations from users might only lead to further provoking Tank. More so, such comparisons need a reality check as well. When it was time to face the music, Marcos Maidana, even with the last switch-over of gloves, gave Mayweather Jr. one of the toughest fights of his career. Per CompuBox details, the former hit ‘The Money’ more times than any of his opponents in his last 38 fights.
