It has been almost a year since Errol Spence Jr, former welterweight champion, entered into the ring with Terence Crawford to secure the undisputed status. It was a battle that exposed a lot of frailties in Spence’s game. Truth be told, it was a one-sided beatdown. Knocked down three times in the fight, the referee saved Spence from taking further punishment in the ninth round by waving the bout off, ending in a TKO win for ‘Bud’. The fight made reputed analysts question Spence’s durability in the fight game. Does he have it in his gas tank anymore to compete with the best?

“I believe Errol Spence should consider retirement. That’s how bad that a** whooping was.” Stephen A Smith had said on ESPN’s First Take show last year. Fast forward, and almost a year later, reports are trickling in about Spence Jr. fighting Sebastian Fundora at junior middleweight in October on an Amazon-Prime PPV event card to be held at AT&T Stadium. If everything goes according to plan, Fundora will be defending his WBO and WBC belts against the former unified welterweight champion who will be making his debut in the 154-pound weight division. That begs the question: Is another “a** whooping” coming for Spence Jr.? Well, boxing insider Rick Glaser shares a similar sentiment to Stephen A. Smith who thinks it will be a “one last money grab” before he hangs up his boxing gloves.

Can ‘The Truth’ handle the truth?

Is Rick Glaser giving us the gospel truth? Well, he took to X to give his harsh assessment of the Texas-based boxer on X. This is real, & to the doubters you will see that Spence is shot to pieces when he faces #SebastianFundora in October. This fight should definitely be titled perfectly “One Last Money Grab,” he said.

Elaborating on how he came to that conclusion, Glaser stated, “Terence Crawford put a sustained 9 round beating on Spence, that beatdown has long-term effects.”

Detailing the toll that the last fight against Crawford might have had on the 34-year-old boxer’s body, the veteran boxing promoter wrote on X, “There are tell tale signs of being a shot fighter, slowed reflexes, slurred speech, legs are gone including not being able to privet in the ring like prior, & punch resistance being down.”

Add to the list three horrific car crashes. and the accumulated damage that a fighter with a professional career of over a decade receives, and you can begin to understand Glaser’s point. Moreover, Fundora is a tricky opponent with 6-foot-5½ height and an impressive 80-inch reach. Coming on 11 days’ notice in place of Keith Thurman, he bested an elite boxer in Tim-Tszyu in his last fight to become a world champion for the first time in his life. Being a hungry young fighter, Fundora won’t be an easy feat for Spence.

To make matters worse, Spence Jr. has parted ways with his trainer Derrick James under whose guidance he became the unified welterweight champion.

Lawsuit breaks up long working relationship

Derrick James had been training Errol Spence Jr. since his amateur years and was instrumental in his hugely successful professional career. But now, a legal dispute has ended that relationship. According to The Ring, James sought damages over $5,000,000 for not being fairly compensated for the Terence Crawford fight. James’ legal team stated that he should receive ten percent of the total revenue earned by the fighter instead of what he was paid. Reportedly, James got a $100,000 bonus and ten percent of Spence’s $2,500,000 guaranteed purse. But Errol’s former trainer’s legal team alleged that he should also be paid a percentage of the PPV revenue.

On the other hand, ‘The Truth’ filed a counter-lawsuit seeking declaratory relief. It is quite unfortunate that their working relationship is ending so bitterly considering that James has been with the boxer for the entirety of his 12-year professional career.
