There’s always a trifecta of boxers in each generation that stands out of the rest. In the current one, it’s Gervonta Davis, Shakur Stevenson and Devin Haney, even though the last one has fallen off after the beating he took from Ryan Garcia in April. Regardless, their former teammate, sparring partner and Mayweather Promotions protégé Robert Meriwether has named the best among the three.

Meriwether has already featured in two fights in 2024, and according to a report from Boxing Scene, the ProBox TV promoted talent is looking to secure three more wins before the year comes to an end. Regardless, when a reporter from Fight Hype caught up with him today, asking for the best among the three, here’s who he named as the superior.

Robert Meriwether believes that experience will prevail

Naming his champion among the three, the 19-year-old said, “Against all the other guys, in my opinion, I got Tank. But I do feel like it’s a tough fight [among] all of them”. And the best part is, these three boxers facing each other is inevitable—Davis and Haney are at odds with each for the longest time. They have even sparred with each other with the clip of their sparring session leaked to the public, so no doubt, they will have to enter the ring someday.

On the flip side, Stevenson has been respectful towards Davis, but he has made his intentions to face Davis known on several occasions. Not to mention, he has amped up his fight demand since before Davis fought Frank Martin earlier this month. Nonetheless, ‘King’ Meriwether explained, “They have really good boxing skills, boxing IQ and they know what they’re doing in the ring”. Despite all this, the 19-year-old believes Davis’ experience will prevail if they fight.

Suggesting, “We don’t know if Shakur or Devin [have] the pop to keep Tank off of [them],” ‘King’ thinks Davis’ killer instinct is too much for Stevenson and Haney. Meriwether was unsure whether Stevenson can build up the power to press Davis to the limits, but said, “for right now, [they are] not going to be able to”. Interestingly, an old X back and forth involving the duo hints at the same result.

Ahead of Ryan Garcia vs. Devin Haney in April, the Victorville native shared the sparring footage between Haney and Davis on YouTube, which showed Haney getting rocked while being on the back foot the entire match. Adrien Broner had to step in to stop the fight at one point, so after seeing the sparring session, Stevenson chimed in.

He wrote, “Never in my life have I taken a beating like that by any fighter, good lord”. While Stevenson took a dig at Haney, Davis didn’t want to let Stevenson play coy. Davis quickly responded in a now deleted tweet, “You know what’s up too”. What’s more, Haney later claimed the sparring footage was highly edited to make him look bad.

Akin to what Meriwether said, most people in the community have the same opinion about the  trifecta of lightweight boxing. Since a shadow of doubt is hovering over Haney, Stevenson is the only one who can prove everyone wrong. Who do you think is the best among the three?
