WBC interim lightweight champion Ryan Garcia, a rising star in the boxing world, recently caused a stir with his comments about his fighting style and comparisons to the legendary boxer Muhammad Ali. In an interview, ‘KingRy’ defended his hands-down, chin-up approach by citing Ali’s unorthodox style and success in the ring.
Garcia is set to face WBA (Regular) lightweight champion Gervonta Davis this month in what is expected to be a spectacular showdown. Moreover, it looks like he is ready to address the style of boxing that he himself has used a lot. In a recent interview with Complex, Garcia argued that in boxing, it’s not about having a textbook technique, but rather about being wise in the ring.

He pointed out that Ali, despite his non-traditional style, became one of the greatest fighters of all time. Garcia also emphasized the importance of entertainment value in boxing, stating that fans want to see exciting fights, not just technical mastery. “Muhammad Ali had his hands down half the time with his chin up in the air. How did he become the best fighter in the world? In boxing, you can’t rely on any of that. Really what it comes down to is how wise that person is being in the fight,” he said.
This is not the first time Garcia has defended the hands-down style. However, while his comments may have some merit, they also raised some concerns. In addition, these concerns and merits were addressed by the fans who were quick to react to this clip.

He’s not completely wrong.
Sometimes you sacrifice safety for comfort or the other way around. Comfort for safety. At the end of the day do what’s gonna give you the best chance to win. Might not be pretty or technically correct.— Eric Garcia (@edeek_garseeya) April 8, 2023
The fans had mixed reactions to Garcia comparing his style with the late great. While some think that he should not be on interviews comparing himself with all-time greats, others see the similarities in their styles. Although Garcia’s comments about his fighting style and comparisons to Ali may have some validity, it’s important to approach them with caution.
