Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. sober for 15 years—Is he the ultimate role model for young boxers?

A few days ago, fans witnessed a heartfelt plea from Henry Garcia regarding his son Ryan Garcia‘s challenges. His concerns were primarily centered around the young boxer’s drinking habits. The young boxer has been going through a very rough patch. As if the one-year suspension and the financial penalties following his drug test failure were not enough. ‘KingRy’, in the latest development, found himself in a fresh round of worries. Apart from the universal castigation, some of the negative and unsavory comments he made online received scathing criticism and reprimands. As a result, WBC, following its stand on such issues, expelled him from its membership.

The Californian, who will turn 26 next month, reportedly offered his apologies for his conduct and stated that he would proceed towards rehabilitation. The boxing world is still recovering from the shock of his rants and debates about his path forward. However, there appears to be a widespread agreement of sorts that Ryan Garcia badly needs some help. Ever ready and willing to help a boxer in need of support, WBC boss Mauricio Sulaiman went into action mode. He roped in none other than boxing great Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. to send a message to ‘KingRy’. Hopefully, he’s reading and watching the message. He should know that there are others who went through a dark phase but eventually came out.

Direct message from @Jcchavez115 to @RyanGarcia. Julio will celebrate next month 15 years sober,” wrote Marucio Sulaiman. The message from ‘El César del Boxeo’ was delivered in Spanish. It roughly translates to the boxing legend, whose record of suffering his first defeat after 89 wins and a draw still inspires boxers across generations, encouraging Garcia to ask for help whenever needed.

Julio Cesar Chavez said that he has experienced a similar situation to what ‘KingRy’ is currently going through. One of the followers incidentally asked what the message roughly translated to. Help was at hand. Another user proactively responded back: “I went through what you went through; put in the effort, ask for help, and we’ll give it to you.

While respecting the boxing elder’s efforts, referring to Ryan Garcia, a fan commented, “He’s walked the path of destruction. Imagine how much GREATER JC would have been. He wants @RyanGarcia to achieve his potential & not self to destruct.”

Though he reached boxing heights in a career spanning nearly a quarter of a century, Chavez went through a turbulent period as he battled his alcohol and substance addictions.

Julio Cesar Chavez: The Journey of a Boxing Royalty Through Tests

According to a story on Marca, the former multi-division champion’s post-victory celebration included binge drinking, often lasting till the wee hours. He went about following the routine for days on end. Most of the time, he would end up barely having slept at all. Otherwise, when he used to wake up, he would immediately go for a beer.

However, he eventually made up his resolve to get rid of all such addictions and entered into rehabilitation—not one but reportedly several. As mentioned in Sulaiman’s tweet, the boxing legend has been out of alcohol and banned substance abuse for nearly fifteen years. Perhaps Ryan Garcia can speak to and take some valuable advice from the much-experienced Julio Cesar Chavez and turn around his lifestyle for his own good.
