When Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran shared the ring three times over the course of their careers, the two fought toe-to-toe with nothing held back. It was one of the most celebrated rivalries in all of boxing. Although Ray Leonard would usually move around with that cream of footwork he had, against Duran, the American boxer decided to stand in proximity and exchange shots. Those three fights are still talked about today and Shakur Stevenson hopes to recreate Duran vs. Ray Leonard against Gervonta Davis.
Shakur Stevenson and Gervonta Davis are two horses about to enter their prime. However, already, by displaying their skills and ring IQ, the two are among the top faces in the sport and fans are craving a showdown between Shakur and ‘Tank’. Lately, coach Kenny Ellis (one-half of Gervonta Davis’ coaching duo) discussed the banger ‘Tank’ vs. Shakur could produce. As per Ellis, Shakur vs. Tank could sell out any day of the week.
In the wake of Smith’s comment, Jeff Zimmerman from FightHype branded Shakur Stevenson vs. Gervonta Davis as the “modern-day” Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Tommy Hearns, another legendary boxing rivalry that produced some notable and historic fights. However, Stevenson, a student of the sport, disagreed. In his opinion, if they were to fight, it would be closer to a fight between Roberto Duran and Sugar Ray Leonard.

“I think it’s more so like a Duran vs. Ray Leonard,” answered Shakur Stevenson immediately. At this, Zimmerman mentioned that Davis’ coach, Kenny Ellis, had faith in Gervonta’s abilities to defeat Shakur. In his response, Shakur Stevenson respectfully disagreed with Kenny Ellis.
Shakur Stevenson is “100%” confident of winning against Gervonta Davis
Gervonta Davis certainly has commendable power and can shut the lights of anyone given he is able to land his shot accurately. Moreover, Davis makes his knockdowns look effortless. That is how calculated and precise his punches are. He is certainly one of the few fighters who understands range and reach exceptionally well. So, it is not unusual for coach Kenny Ellis to have faith in Davis. However, will that frighten Shakur? Absolutely, not!
“I ain’t really see what he [Ellis] said so I don’t know. But, he should pick his guy to win. Everybody should believe that they gonna win and that’s very normal. But I’m 100% sure that I’mma win. So, we’ll see once the day lines up,” said Shakur Stevenson politely. With that said, who is your pick – Shakur Stevenson or Gervonta Davis? Let us know in the comments below.
