Is Oscar De La Hoya right to call Berlanga's sold-out PPV a 'snoozefest'? What's your take?

On Mexican Independence Day weekend, Canelo Alvarez will be defending his unified middleweight titles against Edgar Berlanga at MGM’s T-Mobile Arena. The marquee boxing event will butt heads on the same night with the UFC Noche (UFC 306) event where Sean O’Malley will defend his UFC bantamweight title against Merab Dvalishvili at the Las Vegas Sphere.

The UFC president Dana White might already be concerned as the Canelo headliner event is reportedly on its way to being sold out pretty soon. Additionally, rumors are filtering in that the UFC Noche event is lagging behind in ticket sales, and Dana White’s “Love Letter to Mexican people” on Mexican Independence Day might face a heartbreaking rejection.

However, Canelo Alvarez’s former promoter-turned-foe Oscar De La Hoya has come down hard on his upcoming fight in his recent clap back Thursdays, citing that the PPV prices are way too steep for a fight of “subpar” quality. Calling the upcoming boxing event on September 14 a “robbery”, De La Hoya stated that the mega boxing event at the T-Mobile Arena on September 14 would pale in comparison to the UFC Noche event at the Sphere in terms of PPV sales, regardless of the ticket sales.

“So we’re a week away from the boxing match that nobody asked for and the UFC event that everybody will be watching. Canelo’s fighting Berlanga, another snoozefest. They’re trying to sell a PPV for $90 and $500 minimum in person. It’s just robbery at this point to pay for another lame Canelo fight that always goes the distance against a subpar opponent,” an animated and shirtless Oscar De La Hoya said.

Despite De La Hoya’s prediction about Canelo’s upcoming fight, early signs point toward ‘Cinnamon’ putting on a runaway success, at least in terms of gate revenue. Over the entirety of this year, Canelo has faced criticism over not facing high-caliber opponents like David Benavidez or Terence Crawford, but he won’t be swayed into fighting them until somebody is willing to dish out large sums of money. Nevertheless, the jury is still out on whether the Mexican boxing icon’s fight against Berlanga would be a PPV success.

However, this isn’t the first time that Oscar De La Hoya had Canelo Alvarez in his crosshairs for his weekly clapback Thursdays rant.

Don’t make wrong enemies!

His Excellency Turki Alalshikh is the most sought-after matchmaker in boxing. Lately, the Saudi Arabian royal has been putting up the fight that fans want to see. Keeping the boxing fans’ interest in mind, the Saudi Arabian Royalty came to Canelo Alvarez with an offer to fight Terence Crawford. However, Canelo gave HE Turki Alalshikh the snub. In return, Alalshikh closed all doors to any future negotiations with Canelo, citing that he aims to put up top-notch boxing matches for the fans at a “fair price”.

Witnessing Canelo’s beef with HE Turki Alalshikh, Oscar De La Hoya called his former charge “an arrogant piece of sh*t”. “So it turns out I’m not the only one who thinks Canelo is an arrogant piece of sh*t. Turki Alalshikh recently revealed that Canelo refused to meet with him and isn’t entertaining any deals to be done with him. Why? Because he’s outpriced himself so much that the Saudis don’t even want to deal with him.”

Furthermore, De La Hoya stated that Canelo Alvarez is making the “wrong enemies”. Currently, Turki Alalshikh is the golden goose in boxing who has put out some good fight cards as part of the Riyadh Season. He also has partnerships with several renowned boxing promoters like Frank Warren, Eddie Hearn, and Oscar De La Hoya himself, in an attempt to galvanize sparring factions in the boxing business and provide matchups that the boxing community would like to watch. In that vein, rubbing off the Saudi Royal the wrong way might not be beneficial to Canelo in the long run.
