Is Amanda Serrano dodging Skye Nicolson, or is Nicolson not ready for the big leagues yet?

It has been 13 months since Amanda Serrano fought in the featherweight division. But she has graced the boxing ring twice between the same interval, a tune-up fight and a fight against Katie Taylor. So, the questions are obvious. What is the unified featherweight champion doing with her titles? And no one is more critical than WBC champion Skye Nicolson, who has been chasing a fight with her for well over a year now.

Nicolson, 29, clinched the interim title last September against Sabrina Maribel Pérez and soon saw herself fight for the full title earlier this year in April against Sarah Mahfoud. What’s interesting? The Australian champion has already defended it twice. She has already clarified her intentions—she wants the undisputed title next. But she is also anxious about the hypothetical fight.

Nicolson, at 12-0, spoke about her rivalry with Serrano, 36, in a conversation with Boxing Social. She explained that she had done everything she could to push for the fight. According to her, the fight had traction, and fans wanted to see the fight.

The Meadowbrook native said, “Compared to about a year ago, when I was her mandatory, people kind of laughed about me fighting her. And now a lot of people think I beat her. A lot of people say it’s a fight that you just have to see before you’ll know. And that’s how I feel about the fight as well.”

However, the WBC champion also admitted the bout could go either way, and she wasn’t sure of her chances. But she backed herself. She continued, “I believe I have the skills to beat her. But it is one of those fights where you don’t know until you’re in there. But I back myself.”

Nicolson also disclosed she wanted the fight and the challenge, and she believed Serrano, at 47-3-1, could give her that. While she continues to hotly pursue the fight, she is also mindful of not disrespecting the unified champion.

Skye Nicolson keeps it respectful against Amanda Serrano

The former Commonwealth champion added, “I’m not disrespecting her by wanting to fight her. I just want to prove myself as a champion.” Nicolson also pointed out how Serrano talked about the initial struggles. But she also felt the champion didn’t want to get others the share of the pie she was getting now.

The featherweight fighter stated, “She always talks about how much of a struggle it was for her in her early days in the career. It’s almost like she doesn’t want to give anyone else the opportunities that she’s now getting.”

For Nicolson, there are other fights in the division, but after already defending her title twice and having a productive 2024, she wanted to move to bigger things, such as undisputed glory. However, Serrano calls the shots for it. What’s more? Nicolson suggested she was open to fighting 12 rounds of 3 minutes each to bag the fight and prove her worth. It now remains to be seen whether Serrano accepts the challenge or not.
