Skye Nicolson has doubled down on Amanda Serrano. The two have been at loggerheads for a while over the tussle of the undisputed crown and a fight to decide the future of the featherweight division. However, the Australian champion hasn’t received what she is hunting for. Why is that? She believes it’s a well-thought-out plan to avoid her.
Nicolson, 29, is coming on the heels of a dominant display against Raven Chapman, where she successfully shielded her WBC gold strap for a second time. She has called out Serrano, 36, to put all the other titles on the line and have a unification fight with her. The WBC champion did the same when she sat down with Sky Sports and told how Serrano, at 47-2-1, had been “dismissive of her.”
Nicolson, at 12-0, admitted that Serrano had been on her radar. But the Puerto Rican champion never entertained the idea of fighting her. She said, “She [Amanda Serrano] has been on my radar. She has been very dismissive from the get go.” Nicolson then continued and explained how when she became the WBC mandatory after she went 9-0, Serrano was made aware that WBC was ordering her as mandatory. It was then ‘The Real Deal’ vacated her WBC title after raising the issue of wanting to fight 12×3 minute rounds.

The Meadowbrook native continued, “She kind of got around it in a way that convinced all her fans and followers that she is vacating the belt because she is fighting for women’s rights. And, um, the right to fight for 12×3 minute rounds. And the people who support me and could see what really happened were saying, ‘No. She is ducking Skye Nicolson.'”

Interestingly, since vacating the WBC title, Serrano has only fought once, a 10-round affair with Stevie Morgan. The Carolina native will fight Katie Taylor next, which is also another 10-fight fight at lightweight. It only adds to Nicolson’s argument that Serrano should avoid a fight with her under the garb of women’s rights. What’s more? Nicolson would have fought anyone who held the other belts, not necessarily Serrano.

The 2018 Commonwealth Games winner had expressed to SkySports that Serrano was never the “ultimate target.” The ultimate target was to be undisputed, and Serrano happened to have the belts. Nicolson had even disclosed her intention to put on a solid string of performances over the next 12 months, forcing Serrano to fight with her.

Nicolson declared, “By the time I do what I want to do in the next 12 months, Amanda Serrano will need me. Not the other way round. She’ll be chasing the fight with me.” It remains to be seen whether she will get her dream fight next year or not. But Nicolson is ready to snatch it and the undisputed title.
