In the world of boxing, where passion runs high and opinions vary widely, a recent Facebook post attempted to catalogue the ‘Top 10 Pound for Pound Fighters’. Boxing enthusiasts know these lists are contentious, often leaving many punching their screens in disagreement. Yet, few could have predicted the uproar this latest list would cause.
Bare-knuckle truth is, no two fans see the boxing world through the same lens. Everyone has a favorite fighter, a cherished underdog, a personal pound-for-pound champion. But what if the expected names are missing? What if you find your familiar boxing universe flipped upside down? What happens when the perceived order shatters?
Imagine a list without Canelo Alvarez, a prominent figure in the boxing world. Picture it boasting names that are, according to some, better suited to a ‘most improved’ list than a pound-for-pound ranking. Imagine the chaos that would ensue.
Beterbiev and Canelo Alvarez: The glaring omissions in the controversial list
At the top of the controversial list stands Terence Crawford, an uncontested choice as confirmed by fan Jeff Boudreaux, who chimed in, “Well, you got #1 right at least.” Crawford’s position was followed by the likes of David Benavidez, Dmitry Bivol, Naoya Inoue, and Tyson Fury, rounding out the top five. The second half of the list then named Gervonta Davis, Shakur Stevenson, Devin Haney, Errol Spence Jr, and finally, Isaac Cruz.
Unsurprisingly, this unique roster raised more than a few eyebrows among die-hard fans. Alex Tatetsu couldn’t hide his disbelief, laughing off the lineup, “That’s the funniest P4P list I ever seen!” His reaction resonated with many who found the list hilariously out of sync with conventional rankings.
Contrary to Boudreaux’s agreement with the first place, Carl Powers questioned the glaring omission of a fan-favorite, “How is Canelo not on this?” he demanded, showcasing the general dismay over the absence of the widely admired Canelo Alvarez.
Isael Guzman added his own zest to the controversy. “This man has a substance in his body or in his mind,” he quipped, suggesting either an outlandish bias or a curious logic behind the list’s creation.
Rounding off the fan reactions, Mike Nangalia delivered a punchy critique. “Beterbiev would definitely be in the top 5 minimum. This list is silly”, he stated outright, drawing attention to another significant exclusion, that of Artur Beterbiev.
These unconventional rankings have definitely stirred up the boxing community. From amused disbelief to outright criticism, fans have made their voices heard. Yet, this just goes to show how subjective these lists can be. In a sport as diverse and dynamic as boxing, the true ‘Pound-for-Pound’ king is truly in the eye of the beholder.
