Yordenis Ugas shared two photos of himself through his X account. Both showed him to have severe swelling around his right eye. So much so that it appeared shut. However, highlighting the misery afflicting his eye, the Cuban-born boxer and Olympic bronze medalist shared a motivational epilogue. He wrote about always envisioning himself pleading with the doctor to allow him to continue. He could never give up or sit quietly in the corner. Even the doctor at the hospital highlighted how he ended up injured for the second time in a row for the same reason.
Ugas said, “…I will always share my story, so those who love me will be motivated, and those who hate me will also be motivated, not so that you feel sorry for me…don’t need you to feel sorry for me. I am a successful man, respected in the world of boxing, fulfilling my dreams, and I have something that nothing can buy, which is the respect of my Cuban community.” Soon, many followers joined, sharing their thoughts. While most requested that he care for his health, a few couldn’t resist advising him to hang up the gloves.

Yordenis Ugas: Through injuries and losses
In an excellent performance, Errol Spence Jr. defeated him the following year. Concerned over Ugas’ swollen right eye, the ringside physician recommended stopping the match. Yordenis Ugas returned over a year later to face Mario Barrios on the undercard of Canelo Alvarez versus Jermell Charlo. His fate had barely altered. He suffered his second consecutive defeat in two years. Once again, concerns arose since his right eye had swollen shut by the eleventh round. However, the doctor allowed the fight to continue. It remains to be seen whether it’s time for the former world champion to call it a day while his health still permits or if he wishes to chase that last gasp of glory.
