The boxing world finally made peace when it dawned that Canelo Alvarez would defend his title from a champion leapfrogging two divisions! The decision took everyone, fans and alike, by surprise. Given how the Mexican superstar recently fought against John Ryder, questions on whether he’s still the same Canelo Alvarez who once bulldozed every opposition cropped up. A former champion hailed him not long ago. But now, according to him, the Super Middleweight champion doesn’t even stand near where he used to once.

The battle of the undisputed title holders occurs on September 30 in Las Vegas. In September last year, he defended his title from old rival Gennady Golovkin. Canelo Alvarez then underwent surgery and returned by May 6 to protect his belts again from the Briton John Ryder. By inclination and clues, it appeared that Alvarez might want to close the bitter argument with Dmitry Bivol. But sadly, his adventure into the Light Heavyweight misfired last year. The Russian outboxed him to hand over his second career loss.

Now Shawn Porter, reviewing his last few performances, appears to have settled with a contention. And it has Canelo Alvarez graded down to a B++. Speaking on his podcast, the former WBC Welterweight title holder said analyzing the Mexican based on the type of opponents he faced won’t work. But during the match against Dmitry Bivol, he could observe Alvarez battling for stamina. Later, against the final bout with Golovkin, he barely exercised any variations. He fought in the template he used in their previous two matches.

Canelito got his flair against Ryder. But Porter lamented he wasn’t crisp and on top of things as he usually used to be. ‘Showtime’ said, “…and I just think that between time between the mileage on him now he’s more of a B ++ fighter not a [a] not certainly not the A plus party that he was three two to three years ago….” According to Shawn Porter, it is at such a time when Alvarez is most vulnerable that someone like David Benavidez could strike gold by going against him and make it to the headlines.
