Embracing a fresh challenge in his boxing journey, Shakur Stevenson is poised to pursue the honor of being a three-weight world champion. The 26-year-old has already clinched the WBO Super Featherweight title in 2021 & WBO Featherweight title in 2019. Now, he will be eager for the third one. Set against the backdrop of the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on November 16, the skilled boxer is set to square off against power puncher Edwin De Los Santos in a bid for the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) lightweight world title. Stevenson is aiming to etch another thrilling chapter into his career highlight reel.
Shawn Porter, in a recent podcast episode, discussed Stevenson’s fighting style with Demetrius Andrade and gave the fans a detailed breakdown of how the punch down might unfold. What Porter also revealed was how to counter Stevenson’s swift style.

Shawn Porter has relevant pointers for Edwin De Los Santos to face Shakur Stevenson
Stevenson’s counter-punching technique might seem like a catch, but Porter has solved the unsolvable. He has not just one, but two ways to tackle a counter-punch. A counter-punch is a fist thrown immediately in response to an attack. Porter’s dad taught him the trick to beat a counter-punch.
While counter punching might be effective in the face of one, two, or even three punches, it will become futile when a combination is thrown in. “A counter-puncher can counter one punch, two punch, maybe three punches but if you throwing threes and fours, you’re coming nonstop, that counter-puncher does not have the time or even the chance to find the timing to counter you.” said Porter on an episode of the PorterWay Podcast.
“When I grew up, got a little bit older, I realised hey, there’s more than one way to beat a counter-puncher. Counter a counter-puncher.” ‘Showtime’ revealed the second method, which he discovered during his training sessions. Turning the tables on the boxer also helps. Countering a technique like that can make things simpler. These insights would definitely help De Los Santos brace himself before the upcoming fight. Let us delve a little more into how ‘Sugar’ approaches a fight.

Shakur Stevenson’s fighting style
Among the talented crop of lightweights today, Shakur Stevenson stands out as the epitome of purity in the ring. While not a knockout artist, his impermeable style has plugged nearly all the holes in his game. Stevenson commands bouts with a confidence reminiscent of Floyd Mayweather, controlling the pace with precision rarely seen in boxing.
In an often overlooked quality, his accuracy sets him apart. It makes each precisely placed punch more impactful than a flurry of less precise strikes. Much like Mayweather, Stevenson’s sharp and basic southpaw style yields maximum results with minimal effort. His continual improvement spells trouble for his opponents. Stevenson’s every move remains calculated and effective in the evolving landscape of boxing. The 26-year-old also holds mastery over controlling the timing and distance inside the ring, which would not fare very well for De Los Santos.
