Often, more than the fighters, it is the promoters who are at war against each other. When negotiations fail or a bout is called off, it is the promoters who are asked for all the answers. When the much-anticipated fight between Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney, both their promoters seemed to get into a heated exchange.
Both Bernard Hopkins and Bill Haney were present during the clash between Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Fredrick Lawson. When Haney was in the middle of an interview with FightHubTV, he was talking about his son and Ryan Garcia. He was then interrupted by Hopkins, Golden Boy’s co-promoter, who asked him for a private talk in the bathroom. After Haney rejected the request, the pair was caught almost exchanging blows. On all of this, former two-time welterweight champion Shawn Porter shared his thoughts. Let us see what he had to say.

In his interview with FightHubTV, Porter talked of various realities of the sport. He had previously mentioned that he knew a lot about the business but would not reveal it to the public. This time, he mentions, “I’m dangerous to boxing”. He talked of how he knows enough to ruin businesses in the sport. Following this he brought up the scrap between Hopkins and Haney. He said, “If we rewind back to Bernard Hopkins pushing Bill Haney. Bill came in tryna run the game and you can’t run the game with somebody that knows the game. You can run it with other people but you can’t run it with Bernard.” saying Haney cannot overpower Hopkins in the business.
He further mentioned, “Bernard didn’t run away. Bernard walked away ’cause he knows nothing’s gonna happen, you wanted this, so here it is.” stating that Hopkins did not evade the altercation because he does not need to. He wanted to put on a show and he did so.
Porter ended it off by saying, “Smoke and mirrors is what boxing’s about,” talking of how deluded and illusion-filled the sport of boxing is. While the Haneys might not have secured the fight with Garcia in their bag, there are others who will do just as good. Let us find out who.
Bill Haney makes surprise appearance in Conor Benn’s conference
Conor Benn defeated Peter Dobson on 3rd February. It was his first fight after coming back from suspension following a failed drug test. While he was hoping to fight Chris Eubank Jr, it seems that is not on the table anymore. An even better choice for him is Devin Haney, the WBC Super Lightweight champion.

In the post-fight conference of his Dubson fight, Benn was greeted by none other than Bill Haney. Haney said, “I heard somebody’s looking for us… Congratulations Conor. It probably wasn’t the performance you would’ve liked, but we know you’re a real player in the game so I wanted to come over here and tell you congratulations,” stating that Benn was looking for the Haneys. The Destroyer kept himself composed and replied with respect saying, “Thank you, I appreciate that. I’m ready to go. With respect.”
