Last weekend, Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford and Shawn Porter returned to the ring in a 12-round title clash. Right from the get-go, fans knew that ‘Showtime’ Porter would put up a dog fight and that he would prove to be Crawford’s toughest challenge to date.
But the champion from Omaha, Nebraska did not care much about anything that the critics had to say. He went in there, took a look around, and conquered the fight right from the start. Shawn Porter tried hard but Terence Crawford showed that he is levels above by dropping Porter twice in round 10.
After the second consecutive knockdown, Shawn Porter banged the canvas with his gloves in frustration. His father, Kenny Porter, picked up on this and immediately threw in the towel, calling a stop to the contest in round 10.

Many saw his father’s stoppage and reaction to his performance as harsh, Porter himself recently shared his thoughts on his father’s decision. With his post-fight retirement notice, he even revealed that he is now looking forward to the next phase of his life.
“I give my dad a 100% pass because I understand my dad so even in moments when ya’ll may not understand him or you hear what he says and you may not agree with what he says, I know how to weave through what he says and find his points.

“So you can’t expect everyone to do that especially his points. We haven’t had a full conversation about this retirement but I have a pretty good feeling that my dad is completely at peace with everything. I am as well. That being said, I’m looking forward to the next chapter,” said Shawn Porter.
Why did Kenny Porter stop his son, Shawn Porter?
While some would think that it could not have been easy for Kenny Porter to throw in the towel and stop his own son from securing a shot at victory, he himself does not think so.
In a recent post-fight interview, Shawn Porter’s father explained what drove him towards throwing in the towel in round 10 after seeing his son get dropped twice.
“He didn’t prepare like I wanted him to. That just makes me say, ‘You know what? I don’t want him in that situation.’
“He fought a great fighter. The guy’s super sharp. And [Shawn is] at a deficit. It’s like fighting this guy blindfolded when you’re in a deficit like that. So I wasn’t going to let that happen to him.

“When guys get to a certain level, they believe they know what they’re doing, and they don’t necessarily take all the information. So this is where we’re at with it. And I had to make that decision.
“It was an easy decision for me. Easy. He lives right across the street from me. I’ll be having breakfast with him in the morning,” said Kenny Porter.
